I just received the new card info via snail mail today. The return address has both the Citi and Costco logos.
MotherofDragons, You sound like me. We had the Disney visa for years just for the Disney benefits of free pics, stroller rental, etc. but when we stopped going, I changed the card to a Freedom visa. Then, I realized how much money I was leaving on the table. We charge everything we can now and every couple of months, I log onto my account and cash in my rewards as a credit to my statement. I’ve made so much more money than those darn strollers would have cost.
If you have time, you should really go read the slickdeals forum. Wow, those people really know how to juggle the cards to make the most of rewards and cash back deals. You might want to pay attention to those posts about travel rewards and it might be a good time review how “rewarding” that Delta Amex really is compared to some of the other cards. I am still undecided about switching from the Amex everyday vs the Amex Preferred just because of the 6% cash back on groceries! It seems if you spend over $50 per week you will do better with the preferred even with the fee and the 5% cash back for one quarter with the Visa freedom.
Agree, too, about the giant mayonnaise not being the reason to love Costco. They just treat us right and always correct any problems with absolutely no trouble.
I think it would be great to be able to charge tuition, room and board and get cash back for that! No way of doing that as far as I know.
@fidoprincess yeah, I’ve been on slickdeals and I know about “churning”. There are people who juggle those cards and benefits as an art form/full time career. I just don’t have the time to do it.
DH travels a lot for work and puts it all on the Delta Amex, and it is simple and works well for us. We have four tickets to San Fran coming up that were paid for by the Amex, and it was simple to book them and simple to get the days/times we want. That is worth a lot to us not to have a 3 hour layover in Detroit or Dubuque.
I charge my tuition for my university classes on my Amex (or maybe it’s my Visa-one of the two).
I got my info in the mail today. But I also was sent this link (ironically they typed it wrong, but it was easily fixable https://www.citi.com/credit-cards/creditcards/citi.action?ID=citi-costco-credit-card-conversion&cmp=PAC~01~160323~CRDOTHER~Vanity~CostcoWCble)
Will the visa card have our picture on it?
^^god I hope not; mine is terrible.
I did charge tuition and campus housing in our CC when we used the payment plan. The cash back was more than the fee of the monthly credit plan. It reduced the sting slightly. My favorite charge was when we were able to charge (with no fee) for one of H’s retirement accounts.
@MotherOfDragons My driver license picture is uglier.
What I got in the mail today was something from Amex about the transition, not the glossy thing described above.
An update to my #23.
I was able to transfer my Amex travel medical protection to my new Amex card. According to the licensed agent any product that you currently have on your Costco card is transferable to your new card - even if that product or service is no longer available to new clients.
However, it will take one billing cycle for standard types of coverages - like premium car protection - to become officially active on the new card. But, if I rent a vehicle on the new card before the end of the first cycle I’d still be covered. It would just be more paperwork to file a claim.
I am very confused. DH and I got new Amex cards in the mail a few weeks ago, unsolicited. I assume they are because Amex wants to keep us as customers after Costco no longer accepts Amex. But people upthread are saying you have to ask for new Amex cards??
I do not care if I get a Costco branded Visa because I already have a good Visa card that I put all my purchases on and I will just continue to use that. But what do I do about a Costco membership card? I don’t recall getting anything from Costco about that.
I am sure you can have Costco issue you a membership card. Not everyone that is a member has the Amex card, many people just have a plain membership card with their photo on it.
^^^Yes, I’m just curious if they send us one automatically or if I have to go in to customer service. You’d think they would have communicated this by now.
I got something from Citi that had a lot of detail about the new card, but mainly interest rates, nothing about special benefits like purchase protection. It’s hard to get excited about this new card.
I think it said the cards would be sent automatically in June
Yes, the info I just got from Costco said you don’t have to do anything; they’ll send you the new Visa card in May and the old Amex card will stop working in June.
About the only thing you need to do is make sure any recurring bills like Directv, Netflix, or termite bonds are switched over to the new card.
They’re no dummies; if they hadn’t made it this easy we probably wouldn’t have continued using their cards.
Costco will increase membership fee. I did not know it was $55. I thought it was $35. And it will be $60.
coolweather, your link is an analyst predicting that Costco will raise its membership fee. I am well aware the current fee is $55, up from $50 when I first joined years ago.
@mamabear1234 Costco “declined to comment” on the news. I know what that means.
$5 increase, not too bad.
I have more headache with other cash and point reward plans from Amex, Chase, and Citi.
In more than 20 years of Costco membership, my membership fee just about doubled, and now I can get a much better variety of produce and even wine! Compare that to my cable bill that went up from $10 to $97 for the same crappy programming over the same period of time. Kudos to Costco for being so reasonable.
