COSTCO Amex vs. New Costco Citi Visa

Well I don’t want the Citi card. I’ll have to stop at the service desk next time I’m in. Hard to decide if it will continue to be worth $55 a year, now that I stop to think about it.

And I definitely don’t want this new unbranded Amex if there will be an annual fee!

If $5 makes such a huge make or break deal for you, then definitely it is not a place for you. $5 is one Starbucks latte, and since I don’t drink lattes, I am ok with the increase.

Our unbranded Amex offer is no annual fee, but it is not a true cashback. It is a statement credit, which is not the same.

@BunsenBurner not $5 the whole $55. It’s only because of this switch that I am stopping to consider whether I want to continue the whole Costco membership at all. There are only 3 of us at home now, one vegetarian and lots of food allergies, so I really buy for 2. It’s useful to me when we are entertaining, but I can usually get similar values at Wegmans or Amazon.

@BunsenBurner I’m curious why it matters to you that it is a statement credit and not cash back?

With cashback, I can use it any way I want. With statement credit, I have to keep on using the card… Statement credits can only be applied in $25 increments, so if you have $24, you need to charge another $100 to get your 1%, and so on… Gimmicky.

I have a Spark CapitolOne business card that gives me 2% back on all purchases. It does have a $59 annual fee, but I have gotten a lot of checks from them and whenever I want them to send it to me in whatever my earned 2% is at the time.

It is a Visa and also gives me some purchase protection, extended warranty, no foreign exchange fee, primary coverage for CDW on car rentals, and other benefits. We use it as our primary card most of the time.

Ok, I guess i just don’t see that as that big a deal.

The card does varying amounts of “cash back” (ok, credit) but for simplicity sake let’s say it’s all 1%. If you are really that opposed to having to continue using the card, can’t you just spend the $2,500 get the $25 credit and apply it to pay the bill? In other words pay only $2,475? Too me it’s not that big a deal, I would expect to continue to use the card indefinitely and worse case if you decide never to use it again, you lose out on $24.

Or perhaps your just philosophically opposed because it’s “gimmicky”…

When the $25 min is found in the fine print, and on the face the offer says that I’m getting cash back… it is gimmicky.

I am not philosophically opposed to cash in any form. I just like to have no stings attached to it when I spend it. That’s why I liked Costco Amex. Walking with $1,500 cash out of Costco is sweet.

^^Holy frijoles! Take me shopping with you the next time you spend something like that

@MotherOfDragons - if your comment was towards me, I didn’t mean $2500 on one item! Lol!

We just got the new Costco Citi cards. They have a sticker on the card saying “Begin Using June 20, 2016”. I just want to alert everyone that they came in a plain white standard size (#10) envelope with no markings to indicate where they came from or what was inside. I almost threw the envelope away as junk mail, but could feel the cards inside.

Yes, CCs often come in nondescript envelopes, to reduce risk that they’ll be stolen. They can easily be tossed as junk mail for folks who are rushed or unobservant and don’t feel the CCs in the envelope.

I forgot about Costco switching from Amex to Visa. I have a Fidelity Amex card that is also going to be switched to a Visa card in the very near future. If they continue to give me 2% cash back deposited automatically to my Fidelity brokerage account I dont care - might actually prefer Visa as it is accepted more widely than Amex.

I just accepted Amex offer with 0 fee, 3% cash back and $250 bonus (spending more than $1000 during the first 3 months). I have not opened my thick Costco envelope yet. I already have one visa, not sure I want another one.

The thick Costco envelope explains but does NOT contain the card. The card comes in a plain, white unremarkable envelope that looks like junk mail. You will automatically get the Citi Visa if you have a Costco AmEx.

We received the new CITI VIsa but haven’t activated yet. Have been using the new Amex card with the first 3 months bonus as well as using the regular Amex. Have another Visa and a Mastercard… too many cards in my opinion.

My folks still haven’t gotten their new Costco Visa–maybe soon. We got ours and D’s already (different households).

I still have not gotten mine. We have our credit frozen, so if they are trying to do a credit check, they cannot. Does anyone here who has gotten their card have their credit frozen, or anyone else who has their credit frozen also not yet received their replacement card?

@jym626 - I have my credit frozen and I received my new Costco Visa cards already. Ironically to get the new Amex card (who I’ve been a customer of for years), I had to unfreeze my credit so they could do a check. Go figure!

Thanks@ClaremontMom. There is still hope it will come. They say we can’t call visa until after June 20. I have used the AmEx card last month so imagine I’ll get a new bill, though come to think of of it I should probably go buy gas or something to guarantee I’ll get a bill, hopefully with a new account #. I assume they will roll the charges to the new account?
