Costco Home closing- worth a long drive to check it out?

I hear Costco Home stores are closing, there is one 2-3 hours from me. Has any one been there? Are they worth the trip? Outdoor furniture?

Can’t speak to Costco specifically but doubt that a store chain that is closing is worth a 3-hour trip to take advantage of sales prices. I know when the Linens N thigns closed around here the sales were not especially exciting–percentage off not much better than on regular sales days. And in the case of LNT there were no returns and terms were cash or debit card or check only, meaning buyers were potentially stuck with something and had neither store nor credit card company recourse for.

I agree with MattMom. You don’t know what’s going to be on sale compared to what you might be interested in buying. Unless you’re looking for a houseful of things to buy, I’d save the gas money.

Many times when retailers close a store, they turn it over to a liquidating firm. The liquidator paid a set amount for all of the inventory and are trying to sell it for as much as possible to maximize profit. They often bring in additional inventory from who knows where and sell that as well.

As mattmom pointed out above, the terms are cash and carry, all sales final.

Buyer Beware!

Can you clarify?? Are you saying the Costco wholesale chain is closing or just the furniture stores?

Only Costco Home…

Costco Wholesale Corporation Announces Plans to Close Costco Home Stores
ISSAQUAH, WA, Apr 02, 2009 (MARKET WIRE via COMTEX) – Costco Wholesale Corporation (NASDAQ: COST) today announced plans to close on July 3 its two Costco Home stores, located in Kirkland, Washington, and Tempe, Arizona.

Jim Sinegal, Costco’s CEO, stated: “Costco Home has been a valuable experiment for us. We provided a competitive home furnishings alternative to our members in two locations and learned a great deal about home furnishings in the process. The current economic slowdown and resulting weakness in the home furnishings business in particular have led us to conclude that the single-format Costco Home concept does not fit into our long-term expansion plans. As the current lease obligations near an end, it makes sense for us to make this difficult decision now. This decision affects only the two Costco Home locations. Costco is planning no other closures (except for relocation of warehouse facilities), and will continue to offer home furnishings at all other warehouse locations. The closure of the two Costco Home locations will have no significant impact on the operations or financial results of the Company.”

Employees at the Costco Home locations will be offered the opportunity to transfer to other local Costco warehouses. Costco Home employees at the Issaquah home offices will also be offered other opportunities within the Company. We expect no layoffs as a result of these closings.

Costco currently operates 554 warehouses, including 407 in the United States and Puerto Rico, 76 in Canada, 21 in the United Kingdom, six in Korea, five in Taiwan, eight in Japan and 31 in Mexico. The Company also operates Costco Online, an electronic commerce web site, at [Costco.com: Offering thousands of items you won?t find in your local Costco.](http://www.costco.com) and at [Costco.ca: Offering thousands of items you won?t find in your local Costco.](http://www.costco.ca) in Canada.

They actually have amazing prices on the emails they are sending and they are not being liquidated as Circuit City & Linens & Things were, where the prices were not at all a deal

Costco is closing their two Costco Home locations (in WA and in AZ), and it is not hiring any liquidators, as far as I know. I hate their furniture selection (dark wood, drab looks, nothing exciting), and I’m not going to miss that store.

Costco will still sell furniture online and have it in their regular warehouses occasionally, like it used to do in the past.

Agree with BB. Their furniture was mostly crummy import stuff from China. Only good stuff was some patio sets, bed sets, and TVs.

Thanks, Seattlites  That is what I wanted to know

We bought some things at Costco Home Store, a large sectional sofa and patio furniture. They do have some nice patio sets. They only have a few of each item and set usually, even before the closing was announced. I don’t think I’d drive 2-3 hrs. though.

I wasn’t even aware that they had Costco Home  LOL!
I bought some furniture at our Costco and it does look like Pottery Barn. I had a few people tell me that!
