Costume ideas for a horse

I know this is a strange request.
Has anyone made a costume for a horse? Yes, the 4 legged animal.
My D and one of her barn mates are entering a contest at a horse show where both rider and horse are in costume. The costume for both rider and horse need to be simple enough that they can jump jumps. They don’t feel the need to win so it does not have to be a WOW costume just something simple. The horses are both white.
Even if you haven’t actually made one if you have any ideas please share

There was a costume class at a show I was at last spring, and the white horses made great poodles. I wish I could remember all the details. I remember rhinestone glasses on the head and pink stretchies as leg wraps. One was a gelding, and he especially seemed to enjoy his poodle entire. I will see if I can find a picture.

How about the girls dress up as painters (art type not home). Since the horses are gray they can use tempera paint or some other kind of paint to decorate the horses with a landscape or portrait. Alright, this is kind of a weak idea for turning them into Paint Horses.

Sophomore year my daughter and her friends went into the pasture in the middle of the night and painted all the grays bright colors. The farm owner just about laughed her tea out her nose in the morning.

They can’t paint the horses. They have to ride them the next morning in a jumper class.

Someone on another board I go on is trying to turn her horse into a shark for a show…but it would probably get in the way of jumping. And on another forum…these ideas are way too crazy to jump in (or do anything other than walk in), but definitely a good laugh

For ideas that may actually work…
There’s always the simple unicorn idea that could defitinitely work for white horses.

Um…tropical theme? A lei around the horse’s neck/wrapped around the stirrups/on the rider, we got giant sunglasses and put them on the horse, you could probably attach them to the browband somehow if the horse tolerated it, a folded beach towel as a saddle pad.

…and I’m totally uncreative and can’t think of anything else.

Girls dressed as Indians. Some feathers in the horses manes and tails. A few poster paint handprints on the horses. Looks best if the girls can ride bareback (not a good idea if they are jumping!).

How about Pegasus? (wings!)

Or … what about dressing up as a fictional horse/rider pair … I’m thinking National Velvet. You could maybe come up with a way to make the horse black and white, and then dress the rider in pink and black …

Too bad you can’t paint the horses (water colors, of course). White horses would make great zebras. Don’t know what the girls would be though.

I think the unicorn or pegasus ideas are great, but I don’t know how you’d execute it.

You could just buy a large collar and a leash and tout the horse as the “World’s Biggest Great Dane”.

Works better with brown horses, though.

(For unicorns, just tape a paper horn on the browband of the bridle.)

If its a white horse, I would go with a unicorn and fairy(your D) theme.

Thanks for the suggestions.
Those horses in the lead line class were wild.
I am going to pass along the suggestions. I like the unicorn and fairy princess since that is might be easy to do.
They also are considering bees or ballerina’s.

I was thinking grass skirt, hula. But the horse might eat it.

I want to hear what they end up wearing and if they win, costume and jumping.

My d. used to do these. I can’t remember many of them–and of course photos are not in any order. One she did was Lady Godiva, one time she did the headless horseman. Another rider was Zorro. For the life of me, I can’t remember what exactly she did with the horse for his part of the costume with these themes.

The rotating rider costume event was this weekend. The girls after visiting every store in town ended up being fairies. One pink and one purple. The horses had saddle pads in pink and purple that a couple of girls at the barn had won at another show. They wrapped the legs of the horses in colored leg wraps. Glitter on the hoofs and they braided colored scarves in the tail.
They took 2nd in the costume portion. The winners were dorothy and the tin man. They didn’t finish the jumping course so did not place in the jumping portion. The event is called rotating rider. Two riders have to jump a series of jumps in a certain order. Each jump only done by one rider. If one horse refuses the jump the other rider must jump it. It took place in a domed arena under lights. My D’s horse got a bit hyper. On jump 5 he refused the jump and the other girl did not realize it in time and jumped jump 6 instead of coming to do jump 5. It was amazing to watch. Some of the teams jumped to music.
They didn’t win like they were hoping but they had a blast and are already talking about next year.
The regular show the next day went well and she was pleased with her results.

Glad it worked out well. Too bad we can’t see pictures!

Too bad we don’t have pictures! Dear husband forgot the camera at home.

I had a black Thoroughbred and I made him a motorcycle costume. I cut out wheels and stuck them to his legwraps, put a license plate on his tail, handlebars coming out of my dressage saddle and a headlight on his forehead. I wore a biker outfit. It was pretty cool :)
