I think you have a fairly good shot- with raised SAT’s like the previous poster said. I got in Stern with a similar gpa and I’m not sure my extracurriculars were as good as yours (SAT was around 2300+ though). I’m not sure what it’s exactly about, but the job with the yachting business seems impressive.

Stern is a massive crap shoot. I ask myself How did X get in and Y did not? all the time. I guess essays play a big role, I wrote really good ones. Just try hard not to sound like a typical pre-stern student. Write eloquently but very to the point and clear. Organize your thoughts in it well as writing is a part of business. Try to say things about why you like stern that other student’s wont necessarily say. It’s hard for someone on the outside to do this but do some digging on stern websites, find stuff that interests you. There’s alot more to say than just #2 in finance great career opportunities, New York City.

Echoing what L2AB said, don’t dwell on how you’ve had business experience, etc. (you can mention it, but you can also count on a thousand others writing about the same thing). I sometimes get the feeling that my lack of business experience (and total lack of anything related to business on my application… I actually went, “Hmm, which school do I want to go to?” and checked off Stern without knowing anything about it besides the fact that it was the business school and I wanted to go into business) was what attracted me to the admissions officers, haha.

Obviously, they must take some people who emphasize their business ventures, but they also take people who have worked in average jobs, done lots of ECs and been in a few important leadership positions, and don’t really know what DECA and such are.

So definitely mention the yacht business and stuff, but also try maybe writing an essay on the house-building (they like community service, I think… big part of Stern). There’s one question about what attracts you to NYU besides the city – I wrote about the big international presence, but just find something that makes you stand out from the others.
