Assignment:Should heroes be defined as people who say what they think when we ourselves lack the courage to say it?

Many people tend to conform to the community and only accept ideas that are held by most people. But only those who are courageous enough to speak out the truth are true heroes. Without such heroes, our society will be stagnant. Both John Nash and Martin Luther King are good examples to illustrate this point.

By questioning a belief held by many economists, John Nash, changed the realm of economics forever. Before 1950, It was a widely accepted that individual ambitions serve the common good, which was founded by Adam Smith who was regarded as the father of economy. However, in 1950, John Nash found remarkable flaws in this theory, and he questioned that theory by claiming that sometimes individual ambitions are conflicting. Through his persistent endeavour, he developed a systematic theory called “Nash Equilibrium”. At first, John Nash’s theory was considered ridiculous by many economists, because they thought it was fairly presumptuous to challenge Adam Smith’s idea. Some economists have doubted Adam Smith’s theory before John Nash did, but none of them dare to point it out publicly. However, with more and more economists found Nash’s theory more effective than Adam Smith’s, Nash’s theory became one of the fundamental beliefs in Economics, and he won the Nobel Prize of Economics due to his great contribution to economics. Without the courage to speak out flaws in a respected theory, he would never have achieved such a success or brought people to the truth.

Speaking out that Black people are not treated equally as Whites, Martin Luther King, a leader of civil rights movement, made a great contribution to the improvement of racial equality in US. In 20th century, Blacks in the US still suffered from racial discrimination. For example, a black woman was arrested because she did not give a seat to a White people in a bus. Many people are outrageous about the discrimination, but most of them did not express it publicly. On the contrary, Martin Luther King incisively pointed out that Blacks are not treated equally as Whites as the government said, and this inequality contradicts the constitution of the US. Most notably, he delivered the famous speech I Have a Dream in Washington D.C. to speak out this issue. Although he was assassinated due to his activism, he had made a great contribution to the civil rights movement and he was regarded as a hero by numerous people. Today there is even a festival commemorating Martin Luther King in the US. It was his courage to publicly criticize the injustice in the society that made him one of the most respected heroes in the world.

Although speaking out unusual ideas may bring people ridicule or even hostility, but those who have achieved great success or made our world better are those people who have the courage to say what they really think publicly. We should be inspired to say what we really think.
