Hey guys, I’m a junior, so nothing is final, but let me know what you think.
Classes: freshman: 1 AP, 5 Honors, 1 class I can’t get above cp | sophomore: 1 AP, 5 Honors, 1 class I can’t get above cp | junior: 3 AP, 3 Honors, 1 class I can’t get above cp | senior(predicted): 4 AP, 2 Honors, 1 class I can’t get above cp (I go to a catholic school so the religion class I can’t get above a cp class in) I have mostly A’s, only one-two B’s a year
Scores: Right now I am at around 33-34 ACT, probably will use that over SAT
Right now I am: VP of Community Service Club, was on student gov, part of acting (went to states three times for acting competition), and part of my city’s youth Corp for the mayor.
I am also in a wheelchair, so I don’t know if that affects anything positively or negatively.
I would like to go into the SHA. I’ve always loved hospitality, it’s been a dream of mine since probably 7th grade to work with hotels in some way. @brantly
Are you considering a summer job at a hotel or restaurant while in high school? That will be helpful.
Once admitted, there is a 800 hour practicum.
“To graduate from the Bachelor of Science program, you must have worked 800 hours, paid or unpaid, in the hospitality/service industry. Typically, this requirement is fulfilled in two summers; however, part-time employment is accepted.” https://sha.cornell.edu/current-students/career-management/undergraduate/practice-credit/
Be on good terms with your GC, who will assess your rigor, mention ECs, and other traits. He or she can note what you actually accomplished, despite the chair.
What you actually do for comm service will show more about you than just a title. You have time to find something you can commit to, not just a school club. Let colleges see how active you are, how involved.
I feel like I should add a tiny bit more info- my GPA weighted is 4.25/UW-3.79, it slipped a little my sophomore year because I had a surgery and missed about 4 weeks of school, but I did make a good comeback and only had 1 B that semester, (will probably highlight that). Also, I have applied for an internship for a company (hotel), so I’m crossing my fingers it goes well.I forgot a couple of my extracurriculars, so I’m going to re-list them: VP of my Key Club, student council representative for a year, acting (went to states three times for competition and was the first freshman at my school to go to states ever in a solo acting event), part of city’s youth Corp for the mayor, help sign people in at track events, part of young life (a Christian youth group). Even though I am still a junior I have done a lot of research and I do believe Cornell is a really great school for me. (They have a great accessibility program, so they could help me b/c I’m in a wheelchair) Let me know if you have any other thoughts.
If you could, please visit Cornell. It is a very large place with hilly terrains. It does provide good accommodation for those using a wheelchair.
Cornell puts emphasis on fit. In addition to your grades, SAT, EC, your essay will be important part of your package. Show them why you are a good fit and why they should pick you over other qualified candidates. Good luck.
