Could showering twice a day mess up my skin long term? (serious question)

i shower every morning. however, now that i working out late at night before bed, i’ve been taking two showers a day. since my skin dries out after showering, could this potentially be bad long-term?

thanks

it will dry out your skin- but every cell replaces itself every seven years, I ve heard.
Before you dry yourself off, rub in some oil, like jojoba oil, then pat dry.
Since you just showered in the morning & unless your gym routine involves mud wrestling, you can get away with a quick shower- because sweat is another way the body cleans itself.

You can instead use some lotion like Lubriderm or Jergens, which IMHO absorbs better.

Don’t use strong soap; use Dove.

I agree with emeralkity: Just use the second shower to rinse off. You don’t need to scrub.

chlorine is very drying. Get a shower filter that strips it out. makes a huge difference…

My middle son has extremely dry skin and winter was terrible. We tried gooping him up with all sorts of lotions and oils. I discovered the solution by accident. I bought this organic shower gel by Kiss My Face. He literally used to scratch his arms raw, and he hasn’t had a problem since we bought this. I included a link below. Let’s face it, if you’re working out, you need a shower. I think the critical thing is not use products that exacerbate the drying out of it. Try also to keep the showers on the short side and don’t use really hot water. I included a link below because I have order it online. You can also order it on Amazon.

If you have a lot of natural food stores in your area you might be able to find it somewhere. I have tried Aveeno shower gels and everything else and this is the only thing that really normalized his skin.

The Kiss My Face soaps are awesome.

If I were you I wouldn’t bother showering in the morning if you are showering in the evening. It seems like overkill to me. Americans are too clean!

Why are you showering twice a day? It wastes water and is bad for your skin. If you go to bed clean you should wake up clean.

Well, certain parts of our bodies should be cleaned more than once a day. With water, not with paper. You know what I am geting at.
We are a paper culture here. Not very hygienic. Install bidets! Then you do not need to shower yout whole body as often.

My concern would be if your showers are hot or cold. I’ve heard that cold showers help your skin look young longer by keeping the pores small and help minimize hair loss.

I think that is a great idea Kelowna- I don’t know where we would put it though- we only have one bathroom and while it is big- it isn’t * that* big.

H takes really long showers every day- I think he does yoga in there- his skin is dry and he * never* puts lotion on it- he thinks it isn’t masculine or something. Hasn’t he noticed that Robert Redford hasn’t aged that well?
 * maybe* if it is 90F out, he will put on sunscreen- the result has been that even though we are just a couple years difference in age, IMO he looks a lot older ( his smoking doesn’t help either- if you smoke or are around smoke- or eat nasty things, you will need to take showers more often cause your skin will be trying to excrete the toxins)

But in most cases, if you take a daily shower- you really don’t need to scrub your skin so much- you will lose your protective barrier as water is very drying but I agree that a filter to take out chemicals will help a lot. ( your hair will appreciate it too)

I agree that if you take a shower before bed- you don’t need one in the morning, plus think of all the time/water you will save!

I don’t like anything with mineral oil or petroleum

now we also have to watch for parabens as there seems to be a cancer link.
Your skin is the largest organ of the body and toxins are easily absorbed through it.

Ingredients I like.

[Shea butter](http://www.ojobacollective.com/)- lanolin ( I use Weleda skin food at least a couple times a week- while my skin didn’t used to be dry- now it is * very* dry and Weleda makes great products that are affordable), grapeseed oil, calendula * very soothing*,sesame oil, glycerine and [beeswax, are some that I look for.
I really love these soaps too-](http://www.gardnergardens.com/) but I bet you have local resources as well.

The scent also matters to me- Weleda smells great- the jojoba oil doesn’t have a scent- but the molecules seem to be absorbed well, I also use it as a conditioner on my hair before I wash it.

I don’t use KissmyFace ( although I have used their olive oil soap), but that is cause I have found other things I like better- not cause there is anything wrong with it.
I also like Nature’s Gate , Burts Bees and Desert Essence products.
There really are a lot to chose from- and you might find that some work better depending on time of year and climate.

Oil and moisture are different- the reason I suggested the oil after a shower ( the night time one anyway) is that the oil will help seal in the water from the shower into your skin- assuming you take a shower at home.

If you take it at the gym, then it will probably be hard to get dressed cause it does take it a while to be absorbed, maybe that is why there are so many young women walking around naked in the locker room showing off their tattoos- cause they are waiting for the lotion they rubbed on in the sauna to soak in.

Drinking water- ( which I assume you do at the gym at least), makes a difference too.

You can tell this thread strikes a chord with me- I seem to have a condition that doesn’t just make my skin dry, but my eyes and mouth and everything else. :frowning:
So it seems like I am always rubbing something on.

If you are young- you probably don’t have this problem- but exfoliating will help your skin absorb moisture as well- just don’t try and scrub too many layers off!

I have skin that is sensitive to environmental chemicals. I react to aloe, for example. I often shower several times a day just because showering removes dust and other things that irritate my skin.

One, watch out for really hot water. Body temp is ideal.

Two, watch out what kind of soap/detergent you use. And use less of it than you think you need. “Bath gel” is usually a detergent instead of a soap. Detergents are closer to a neutral pH than soap (which is basic). (And you don’t need to use cleanser every time you shower, either.)

Three, pay attention to your diet. Adding flax seed oil or fish oil to your diet will help keep your skin healthy. I learned this one from my dogs, who scratch unless they get flax seed oil regularly. So I added it to mine. Big difference!

Four, the cheapest, safest way of dealing with skin irritations is zinc oxide cream (diaper rash ointment). The catch is that it’s white, of course. Sometimes I put on a thin layer and then wipe it off with a moist towel. That seems to leave just enough to calm the irritations without the white film.

Five, lots of people think they need sunscreen all the time, and don’t realize that the chemicals in most sunscreens are really irritating. I get a rash with every single sunscreen out there, except for titanium dioxide.

Six, watch out for the chemicals in your clothes detergent. Some brands are better than others. I also like to rinse several extra times. If I can smell detergent, I rinse again.

I agree with the posters who said that showering twice a day = overkill. However, if you are prone to night sweats or just feel the need to do it twice, use warm water, moisturizing body washes instead of soap (Aveeno makes a great one with oatmeal extract) and do not scrub. Your skin will thank you. I hope you do not shampoo your hair 2X daily, because even once a day shampooing will damage your hair by removing the essential oils.

My house contains 1 very active hubby + 3 very active kids. Hubby showers every morning + rinses off (no soap or shampoo) after exercise. I’d love it if my kids would do the same.

emeraldkity4 - try a Toto washlet
You will love me forever… I swear ;)

Does Whole Foods carry Kiss My Face brand? I have always read that Ivory is the purest soap???

As others have said, it isn’t necessary to use soap all over every time you shower, unless you are actually dirty. Just soap up your underarms and private parts (I think I said this to my son when he was 5, so forgive my euphemisms), and rinse the rest with plain water. Stay away from any kind of soap labeled antibacterial. If you use drugstore brand soap, try Dove. Also, Cetaphyl lotion is the best moisturizing lotion out there, I swear. It isn’t greasy, and it also has no scent so you won’t end up smelling like a flower!

A dermatologist told me showering every day is bad for the skin, especially with hot water. I shower every day. I can’t wake up and feel human without a shower.
