Thanks you guys

Very nice stats. All I have to say is good luck on the essay! :)

basically, welcome to princeton

Should I try to squeeze in some more Extra Curricular activities before sending the application?

GetMeOutOfHere:

Apply ED. Don’t squeeze, mull. Think over your essays. Write something real. Put together a portfolio of your stage designs. I did a lot of theater at Princeton when I was there - one time a kid got Santo Loquasto, a famous designer, do the design for his play. And Princeton is looking for talent in the performing arts. Someone has to do the sets for all those singers and dancers and actors:).

Thanks Alumother. I hadn’t thought of putting together some stage designs together for a portfolio. Thanks :)

In all seriousness, you are golden. I would not necessarily write two essays about hardships you have faced, although it is certainly understandable that you would want to. Consider writing one that conveys your enthusiasm and energy level, which are obviously considerable; help them get to know you as a person. I assume your recommendations will be excellent. I wouldn’t worry about anything lacking! Enjoy your summer…

Yeah. It’s a heckuva profile. Any questions you have, send them along. Aparent has a daughter attending, simba has a son attending next year, I have a daughter attending next year, and I am an alumna myself. Good luck - stay on the board! Last year the ED kids really had a good time from what I could see.

Good chances

Are my chances affected in any way if my sister has already graduated from a university (University of La Verne)? Thanks.

I can’t imagine why really. Your record should speak for itself. BTW, have you visited any East Coast schools yet?

[Possible essay topics]

If you do this, do this well. I wrote about my father’s death which happened just as I was applying ED Princeton. I think it was far too sad though and turned the adcom’s off as I was not admitted. My ED app was hastily thrown together as well. If you apply ED, take a lot of time on your app and make sure that if you write about death, do it such that you aren’t bawling as you write it. I got into every other school I applied to with better essays that weren’t so focused on death, although my English teacher did mention it in her rec for me.

If you do talk about death, do indeed speak more about how it has affected you as opposed to how sad it has made you.

“how it affected you” as in how it made you better/stronger not how it made you depressed for life.

Which was difficult for me as I hadn’t allowed enough time to learn how death affected me :/

Right. But the later essays you composed had more hindsight and were thus more effective. I think the OP has had more than a day to think about the death and will probably have enough to write a sad yet inspirational piece.

So write about how it has made me stronger? OK, sounds good.

BTW, have you visited any East Coast schools yet?

Nope, just the ones neaby (UCLA & USC). It may sound cliche-ish, but it’s because of the money.

That’s not cliche and it’s totally understandable. For admissions purposes, Princeton doesn’t even track visits, so it won’t help your chances any, but visiting is a great way to get to know Princeton. It is gorgeous

“It may sound cliche-ish, but it’s because of the money.”

It may sound crass, but I would call the Admission Office and tell them you’d like to visit. Offer to fax or mail them a summary of your credentials. I gather there is money around at many of these schools to bring in outstanding students like yourself who happen to have URM status. Might as well put your name in there.

Would they actually pay for the plane ride and everything, or just give me a nice “Hope you join us, this is our address”?

Some schools have programs designed for minorities to visit. Princeton isn’t one with a defined program (a lot of LACs have them) but I suppose you have nothing to lose.
