Could you please give my son some suggests?

My son interesting in Creative Writing, do you know how to show his talent in creative writing. And could you please give some suggests for some activities to him to show off his passion in writing/creative writing. Thanks!!!

He could…write creatively.

edit: for his essay I mean

I did a few writing competitions in high school, and I submitted some poetry with my app as a supplement. Not much, just enough so that they could get the flavor of it.

As for competitions, look into:

There are some more; I did some intense research on this subject a while back, but I don’t remember all of the competitions and prizes I found.

Also, if you son is very good, he could submit some of his writing to small journals or online publications, which would look great on an application. Even if he doesn’t get published, the experience of preparing submissions for magazines and participating in that whole process could be a great essay topic. These books could help:

Thank you so much, silverchris9!!! They are very helpful!!! : )

great post silverchair. outside recognition of his creative writing is very helpful for the admission folks.

to note - columbia does not as of yet accept creative writing pieces as arts supplements. but he could make his essay be creative or send in another short story/poem with his application. the admission folks are not themselves literary critics, but when they see something that impresses them they know it.

depending on his age, he could also consider doing the creative writing workshop at columbia’s high school program.

Thanks, admissionsgeek!!!

My son is a Junior student now and he attended the creative writing workshop(introductive level) at columbia’s high school program in 2009. It was very helpful and he is planning to attend it again in 2010(advanced level). Do you think it will help him more?
