Parents of 2011?

I had to look this one up. :D

41 days till PPW. I’m counting down for the plebes more than the parents. Each day I say they only have ?? to go. I know they can make it and EXCEL!

Okay, so I got a little happy with all of the l’s. I’m glad you looked it up, though. I thought it may be wrong.

No, M2L is out there having a good time traveling, right now (lucky girl!).

Almost home with 40 days to go!

Missing my babygirl! I know she is having quite the adventure in her new A-town.

Okay,

Phone call from Anne Arundel Medical Center. Seems my Plebe hit the deck (low blood sugar) and got a ride to the ER. Nice nurse, Squad Leader at bedside.

Has this happened to anyone else’s mid? I’m quite concerned here. This has never happened to him before.

Nurseypoo, this is not unusual at all. My friend, Jan’s (you probably talked to her looking for me at the picnic) daughter had similiar issues. Not eating enough or drinking enough, it’s hot and humid and they’re stressed and tired. Don’t worry, they’re going to keep a good eye on your plebe now. Jan’s daughter couldn’t leave the table at breakfast until she’d had all this particular juice (to raise her potassium levels) and had to report to Medical until they were satisfied that she was okay. It didn’t impact her relationship with the Cadre (i.e. didn’t cause her any problems). The Cadre have been trained to look out for problems and they’re going to do everything they can to keep them safe.

Ours spent a day early on in a dark room in medical with an IV attached to his arm. Dehydrated and overheated. Surprise, surprise. Going from Alaska to Maryland in the summer was evidently very hard on his body. We had tried to acclimate him a bit by leaving Alaska a week early and spending 5 days in Michigan before going on to Annapolis. Didn’t help either that he is a swimmer and was used to having the cooling effect of the water during workouts. I think I now appreciate the fact that we didn’t learn of his visit to medical until long after it was over, so we didn’t have the opportunity to worry about this particular incident. Nurseypoo, I feel for you! Do know, however, that they took great care of our son and that he successfully finished the summer in spite of that speedbump! Yours will be fine, too.

Perhaps a tall glass of Iced tea (or Long Island Iced Tea!) and some soothing music would help. We are all here for you! BTDT! ;)

Hey, I kinda feel like a parent cadre! What about you, atrmom? Profmom? USNA09mom? Only no yelling. Just lotsa workouts, chocolate and alchohol.

I have to tell you all I have absolutely NO complaints about how they took care of him. The Cadre were great, especially his squad leader (went along with him on the ambulance ride and stayed there till he was released a couple of hours later). One quick squad leader, since they caught him before the cement did!

Same thing about not being acclimated, stress, dehydrated, and not enough caloric intake. They seem to think that the caloric intake isn’t because he doesn’t get enough to eat, he’s just used to spreading it around the day so his blood sugar levels stay up.

However, after a quick liter of salt water (0.9 NS-normal saline) and a nice breakfast (that he ate EVERY single bite of), he was reported to be 110% better and will spend the rest of his day in the rack, until cleared by Navy medical tomorrow. Boy is very embarrassed about this. :(

The staff at Anne Arundel are fantastic! Just in case your mids are ever there. :)

No alcohol today, but maybe tonight! Went and shipped his flat rate package at the post office this afternoon and the postal clerk REEKED of alcohol (plus, she was really rude to everyone, except me. I just kept my trap shut). I feel inebriated just breathing the air around her!!

You guys are the best! Thanks for the support!

HEY NP… We are praying for our California Cousin… aka KILLER! He will be fine and be back up at it so fast! :)

My son sprained his ankle during PS and never said a word to us. He loved it because they sent him to physical therapy for a couple of weeks…air-conditioning and music on the radio…it’s amazing how quickly they learn to appreciate the little things.
Momof1-it’s hard to believe our 08’ers are now the scary Cadre…their I-Day seems like it was just yesterday!

Squad leader called (I didn’t initiate it, since boy is already embarrassed over this) and gave me the rundown. She said she’d call tomorrow after his Dr.'s appt. This just reinforces my opinion of how well he’s being looked after. Very professional young lady and I told her as much.

I wonder just how good the breakfast was in the ER.

A suggestion given to us by a cardiolgist was to send “salty” snacks that will aid in retaining water…

they lose a lot of sodium via sweat, thus their ability to hold “free water” is hampered…add in some vasodilitation from the exercise and heat, and they drop like flies…

so eating something as simple as salted pretzels in the evening, with lots of fluid (electrolyte drinks are best, but anything to stay hydrated)… really helps to hold onto water and preventing this from happening.

Some items we sent along in care packages were pretzel sticks, salted nuts, etc… bananna chips and dried apricots were also good sources of potassium…

as for medical, they are great-
they not only get great care at the time of the “event”, but the followup is very thorough.

Not sure how much “mom and dad” will be kept informed however… although this is where the chaplins were a huge help!

anyway, while I know mom’s and dad’s never stop “worrying,” do find some comfort in knowing they really are in the best of hands!

(by the way…it’s not just the new plebes that drop…this phenomon seems to follow them all the way 'till graduation so we’ve been told!)

There is really nothing more they can do for him than they are already doing and did do. In fact, I wasn’t planning on calling and checking (they’d call me if it was needed, just like they did from the ER), but she gave me a # to get in touch with her 24/7. The only reason they called me is that he hasn’t turned 18 yet and requires parental consent to treat.

They have him sitting there watching his platoon, drinking gatorade and eating.

2010- good idea! I sent some salty snacks out today with his “care package.”
Hopefully, the inebriate postal employee will remember to send it.

If this is how they take care of all of the plebes and MIDN’s, all I can say is how great a job they do. :)

39 days til PPW … Is that right? I am lost!

HA HA… and I just saw the GALLAVANTING Comment from NP/Luigi! I guess I am a Gallavanter?? yeah… thats me!

^^^^I meant the first definition, not the second! But, hey, if the second fits…well… :D

Well, we are back and recovering. My feet will never be the same.

What a trip it was…after wishing it and dreaming about it for many moons, to finally see the boy in the white works and dixie cup…too much!

*Had calamari with Nurseypoo, MOM2LOLA2011, and their kids and mine. You have no idea how outstanding NP’s son and Lola are…so mature, so motivated. NP and Mom, you are my girls!

*It worked out great having the gf there. She kept Spider sane and was so easy to have around. She’s a keeper, I’m coming to understand.

*I was the fool who sat in the sun on the metal bleachers for 4 hours waiting for the first glimpse of the boy in uniform. Got to see him for less than 60 seconds…worth it! We saw hundreds of kids come out and Spider was the only smiler. It is very ironic because he is known for being very serious and not ever smiling.

*Man, did we eat some great food! The very best meal was a tapas place across from Loewe’s called Kyma. Ah-mazing crab cakes and clams Mediterranean. Chart house was a let-down…they burnt my steak. We did get free mud pie out of it though Spider visited Buddy’s like three times for crab legs, his new favorite food.

*We bought out the mid store! Bumper stickers, blankets, tees, polos, sweatshirts, scrapbook, an endless supply of blue and gold items. Yeah!

*Favorite moment (besides Lola seeing my “Team Spider” shirt and going, "Hey, we know you!!) was when the plebes jumped the gun on the oath. Priceless!

*Other than some aggressive vying for position to get photos of the oath ceremony, I didn’t see any untoward parent behavior. I sure did meet dozens of the nicest families and have a long list of phone numbers and email addresses. I did see (Foxtrot’s?) cadre instruct “Say bye mom, bye dad” but I didn’t see that as a response to anything.

*Noticed that the cadre at the Alumni Hall loading dock warmed to their task as the day wore on. They were really into it by the end. Go cadre!

*Spider’s in November Co, 26th platoon. He’s in a four-man room.

*I didn’t cry at all until the last goodbye and then just teared up because Spider apologized for being mean to me the night before. It was the apology not the goodbye that did it.

*I saw a bag with the name Duc on it so, I think it might be our CC Duc from Oklahoma.

*The Foundation had a reception at the O-Club the afternoon before I-Day with the Dant and the Sup. We got a nice photo of all the NMMI preps. Thank you Captain Wallace and the Foundation. Any of you out there soon to be seniors…you get a Foundation offer, you take it!

All my CC buddies…thank you for your love and good humor as we start this thing off.

Great Post Spidermom!

WE LOVE OUR FRIEND SPIDERMOM! WE ENJOYED SPENDING TIME WITH YOU GUYS TOO! SO GLAD YOU ALL ARE BACK! You will have to get on the WHERE’S WALDO HUNT with NP and ME! EXHAUSTING WORK! HAHA

While you have some time, Spidermom, come hunting plebes with us!

Well what are the chances that I would meet up with y’all at the CVW last year, meet again in Annapolis before ‘Spider’ goes through I-Day…and we’d end up in the same company.

The Rough Riders take care of their own…trust me, he’ll be in good hands.

Now I HAVE to take you up on the offer to stay during the North Texas game!
