Coup in Turkey

Putin should be happy.

Some new awful thing every day. The world is going to hell in a handbasket.

This coup will be tweeted.

(I am not trying to make light of the situation but much of the information we’re getting is from social media. It’s a sign of the times I suppose.)

OMG. No words.

That’s the way it feels for sure but gotta wait to see what plays out. Too early.

I hope so, gouf.

Just saw this on Facebook. I have a friend in Istanbul who said that she can hear gunshots and military helicopters overhead. Hoping she (and my other friends in Turkey) make it through the night safely.

Can someone educate me on this?

Obviously I don’t know the specific details, since they aren’t out yet. However, it seems that this was coming due. Erdogan is awful, really terrible. He is grotesquely corrupt and power hungry. Turkey has massively jailed journalists and cut down on freedom of speech so much. It is very sad for a country such as Turkey, with a proud tradition of a secular government, that many people and the military have proudly protected for years, is being turned into just another corrupt Islamic dictatorship. Erdogan recently took it upon himself to say that he plans to make almost 3 million Syrian refugees citizens, which enraged many people. This coup is no surprise.

If our leaders come out and support Erdogan, I am going to puke. They would be much better staying out of it, than supporting a corrupt, evil dictator. I believe this coup is not about someone in the military trying to take power, but the last hope to stop Turkey from going in to the dark ages, and staying a modern, secular nation. This is so sad, Turkey has been slowly taken apart and being recast as another Islamic dictatorship. If this coup fails, I’m sure Erdogan will use this as an opportunity to kill or imprison all of his detractors, and get rid of the secular government entirely.

I’m wondering what kind of impact the social media influence will ultimately have. Different than other recent coups, more like the Arab Spring period? People living there can definitely be more informed, but does it really do anything?
I hope all are safe.

But this is the military ousting democratically elected government, albeit not all that popular.

Turkey can kiss whatever chance it had at EU membership good bye.

Turkey has a history of military meddling in civilian governments.

I don’t know anything about Turkey, so I’m here to get up to speed.

^^Hmm, is it a democratically elected government if you have banned your opponents and the key opposition parties? Is that what democracy is?

Nuclear capability?

Side-note just to say that I love the prevalence of social media covering breaking world events and the exchange of information that happens there. For example, this is from reddit and has been retweeted hundreds of times already.

^ Thank you!

Yes, thank you!

Also, Twitter has recently (?) come out with a news section on the app that allows you to follow an event and quickly swipe through the most relevant tweets - news stations, state departments, ambassadors, etc. - as well as photos and videos in a sort of slide show format. Basically, it’s one of the easiest and quickest ways of getting relevant, real-time, and understandable news. It is so accessible and great for those of us who want to be aware of things like this, but don’t always understand the complex backgrounds behind it. just had to plug that real quick
