Course grade below 80 vs. course credit to increase overall GPA

Hello. My student struggled with the transition into high school. The first year was very tough; however, the following years were significantly better. How bad would it be if courses with grades below 80 in the first year were converted to course credit? This would increase the overall GPA to over 90, but colleges will see credit not grade in year one four courses.

Some schools don’t count 9th in their calculations. Others like to see an upward move.

If they are C or better, I would not convert to P/F. Frankly surprised the school would allow it.

There will be colleges for your child either way.

But I think you own the record vs trying to hide it. This way you eliminate any apprehension on the part of the admissions officers that something is hidden.

Just my opinion.

How many courses are you talking about? And how low are the grades and in which subjects?

Make sure you check each colleges policy about accepting CR/NC or P/NP courses for Freshman application requirements. Some schools want to see a letter grade/%.

This is my feeling also.

One daughter had an acquaintance (someone she did not know well, but they were on a sports team together) who had a similar situation in terms of a rough freshman year and who did relatively well in college/university admissions – significantly better than the acquaintance had expected. The acquaintance was quite happy where she ended up but I do not fully recall the details.

I think that good results in sophomore and junior years will help quite a bit. Some schools will look at mid term senior years grades and some will not, but doing well in senior year will nonetheless also help in other ways such as getting ready to do well in university.

And yes there are some schools who do not even look at freshman year grades.
