Course notations? A little help, please.

I was looking through some of the courses required for my major, and I’m a little confused about the course notations. When a department offers a course X 118a and X 118b, does this mean that the course X is divided into two parts to be taken over two semesters, or does this mean that 118b is the same as 118a, except offered in the spring semester instead of the fall semester? What notation is used for year-long courses?

Course X 118a = Fall one term course
Course X 118b = Spring one term course
Course X 118 = Year Long course

Course X 118La = Fall one term Lab
Course X 118L = Year long Lab

That’s what I originally thought!

However, MATH 230 (for example) is supposed to be a year-long course, and in the YCPS, it’s listed as MATH 230a and MATH 230b.

O_o

MATH 230 isn’t the only weird listing, either.

I don’t have my blue book with me, but I believe in the paper version, year-long courses, such as Math 230, are not divided into a and b, but online are because they are in different rooms and have different professors.
