Course selection help

Hey,

At my school Biology 1 and Chemistry I are required courses, usually taken freshman and sophomore years. AP Bio and AP Chem are available beginning junior year but only after Bio I and Chem I are completed. i chose to take Zoology instead of either AP Bio or AP Chem, as I don’t want to repeat course material. Would colleges see this as the right decision? Most other kids in my class who plan to apply to selective colleges take AP Bio or Chem junior year. I’ll be taking AP Psych next year.

No!

AP Bio/Chem is the equivalent of a first-year college course. Bio I/Chem I is a HS course. AP courses cover the material in much greater depth and breadth. The AP courses are not so much repeating material as they are building upon the foundation laid by Bio I/Chem I.

@skieurope I understand you view, but, at my school, Biology I is taught by a faculty member who also teaches at the college level. It really is an incredibly in-depth course, and I scored very highly on the Biology SAT Subject Test; I could do the same for Chemistry.

You asked for an opinion; I gave you one  Scoring high on a Subject Test will not be viewed by colleges the same as taking the most rigorous course load available. Taking Zoology when AP courses are available would not be viewed as rigorous.

I agree with @skieurope on this one. I doubt that your Bio 1 and Chem 1 classes included every single AP topic. Even if this is the case, it wouldn’t hurt you to sail through an AP science class with an easier A and college credit.

Agreed. If you think Bio and Chem at your school are so rigorous, what’s the problem with sailing through either or both of the AP courses and sail through them with easy A’s? That shouldn’t be a problem with the curriculum you described.
