Course Selection Help

My course schedule at my prep school will be the following for my junior academic year (2007-2008):
Honors English 3 (No AP offered)
A.P. US History
A.P. Environmental Science
Pre-Calculus
French 3
Jazz Band

Will the fact that I am taking A.P. enviro instead of regular Physics hurt me in elite college admissions? I am not aiming towards Ivies but plan on applying to top universities and liberal arts colleges.

Also, what course do you recommend I take for math in my senior year…
A.P. Statistics or Honors Calc. ? Is Calc. necessary for admission to top colleges? AP stats is typically the inbetween class at my school, it is a little tougher then Honors Calc. but not as tough as AP Calc AB and BC. HELP!

Why not take AP Calc. AB your senior year?
And i think the choice between physics and ES depends on what you want to major in.

1) Taking AP Enviro. will not hurt you. While colleges like to see that you have completed the traditional Bio/Chem/Phys track, the AP science will show that you are still aiming high but that you’re more interested in the environment rather than physics, which is completely fine.
2) Since you’ve taken pre-calc, it would seem weird to take AP stats. I would take AP Calc AB. I know you didn’t list that as an option, but it’s really not that bad. You can always try it for a week and then switch out. Talk to your GC and your older friends who followed the same track as you for advice on which would be best to take next.

1) If you are not going to a technical (or engineering) university, it doesn’t really matter and APES might even help (AP classes are highly valued by admissions counselors and you may earn college credit). If you are planning to apply to a non-enviornmental engineering program, take physics.

2) I actually found AP Calculus BC to be easier than AP Statistics. Some topics in our book were difficult such as ANOVA.

OK I will stick with AP ES because I am not heading towards a math, science, or engineering major in college. That’s does not interest me so AP ES here we go.
On the other note, you all suggested AP Calc. but it is a ridiculously hard course to take and I am not on track to take it. I will be taking a regular PreCalc course next year and then senior year my options are either AP Stats or Honors Calc. I will have to ace PreCalc to get moved into AP Calc AB and I’m not sure I want to take it. Between Honors Calc and AP stats which one looks better to you if you were a college counselor?

In my opinion:
AP Calculus BC > AP Calculus AB = AP Statistics > Honors Calculus

lebedev: did you have to learn ANOVA? We didn’t for AP Stats. Was it additional to the curriculum? Or have they changed it since I took it in 10th grade?
