Course selection help

Hello, I am a Computer Science major in Europe and have the opportunity to take a semester abroad at Carnegie Mellon. As it turns out, I have to make a decision about the courses that I am willing to take beforehand. Having no contact with anyone that took courses there, I hope that someone from this forum can answer :). Knowing CMU’s excellence in CS (and the high workload as well), I decided to take only CS courses and no humanities/electives. My plan is to take five 12 units courses, for example : Machine Learning, Robotic Manipulation, Networks, Computer Vision, Computer Graphics. Is this managable ? Should I cut some of the courses or add some more? Thanks !

I’ve heard that a few of those courses are absolutely grueling. Why would you take five of them all at once? Being unfamiliar to CMU, you may want to explore some of the other great departments’ courses to sort of ease up your workload. Not necessarily humanities, but maybe cognitive science, robotics, or hci courses would fit the bill?

I got the same response from other places as well, so I will reconsider my choice. I will most probably apply for 4 courses (3 computer science + 1 AI-related psychology/finance). Any course recommendations?

I have some, but as an exchange student I’m not sure which of those would be open to you and which ones they’d require you to have the prereqs taken at CMU before registering. In AI CS courses, the popular one is 15381 (Artificial Intelligence: Representation and Problem Solving). 85-426 (Learning in Humans and Machines) is offered by the Psych department and is considered a Cognitive Science course.

As far as finance goes, eek. I know little about Tepper. Try looking at the course list on their website, maybe?
