At Andover, it’s expected that you take 5 courses a term. You can take 6 classes a term (which you’ll probably have to do fulfill requirements), however you need to be on the honor roll to do so (means you’re in the top 50% of your class).

As a freshman at Andover, you’re required to take at least 5 classes (English, History, Math, Science, Foreign Language). You’re probably going to wind up taking 6 classes. This is good! This is the best year to fulfill requirements. Here are Andover’s academic requirements for people entering as freshmen:

-3 years of English (English 100, 200 and 300)
-7 terms of History (yearlong course freshman and upper year, and a 1 term course lower year)
-Math up to Math 340, or Precalculus (about 3 years, depends on the student)
-2 yearlong lab sciences (Bio, Chem, Physics, etc.)
-A year of foreign language at the 300 level or a term at the 400 level (3-4 years)
-4 terms of art (1 art class, 1 music, and 2 terms of either art, music, or theater)
-1 term of philosophy
-1 term of PE

As you can see, Andover has pretty relaxed requirements. When you’re a senior, the academic program is supposed to mimic what it’s like in college. So, to answer your question, you can definitely double up on science!

My advice with course selection would be to get your requirements out of the way freshmen year and take 6 classes. Get PE and art requirements out of the way. In your lower year, fulfill your remaining art and philosophy requirements. That way when you’re a senior you’ll have ultimate freedom with your course selection.

I came to Andover as a new lower, and I didn’t plan out fulfilling requirements that well. I’m going to have to take art as a senior probably, which is going to suck. Before picking courses, plan out a course plan for four years with your advisor. I did that at the beginning of this term, and I wish I did that at the beginning of the year!
