I’m a junior transfer, transferring in winter 09 to UCI for Mechanical engineering.

I just checked the mechanical engineering courses being offered at UCI in winter and found that i could only take 1 class as the rest of the classes have prerequisites that are offered only in Fall. This is really pathetic as it makes it impossible to transfer in winter at UCI. But this is not the case with UCLA as they offer every single class every quarter.

Can someone clarify this for me please? Why does UCI not offer important prerequisites every quarter?

I know engineering only offers certain engineering classes once a year (like statics, dynamics, thermo, E54) so if you fail to take it or you failed to get at least a C- in that certain class, then you are behind a year. Are you talking about the upper division classes or lower division?

IRVINER–> The classes that u mentioned are considered lower division and they are offered in summer so thats ok… But there are upper division classes for starters like MAE 140 and MAE 130A, that are offered only in fall. These two courses are basic prerequisites for all other upper division courses. So now, even as a junior transfer, i dont think i can take a single Upper division course. Man they should not have opened admission in winter, if the schedule is geared only in favor of Fall transfers.

the school of engineering does not have the resources to offer multiple of the same classes every quarter. most of the schools resources (in my mind) unfairly go to the bio sci school.
although i agree, they shouldnt have let anyone in as a winter transfer for engineering given this circumstance. are there any GE’s you can take? if you haev this time, maybe take a minor in something you wanted to study but couldnt anyways.

I’m in a similar situation. I’m transferring Winter 2009 for Japanese Language & Literature, but the highest course I can test into is Japanese 3A which is only offered during Fall. I’m confident that I’m at the Japanese 3 level, but I don’t want to wait until next Fall to take 3A. I’m hoping if I can get a perfect score (or very close) on my placement exam and explain my situation, they’ll allow me into Japanese 3B.
