Covering up a sunburn? HELP!

Ok, so I was at Senior Picnic today for 2 hours. I have very pale skin, and (STUPID me) I didn’t think to bring sunscreen because I thought there would be shade.

WRONG.

I got home, and I wasn’t too red, but now my face and neck are quite red. My neck is the worse…I think I can cover the burn on my face with my normal make-up, and MAYBE the gown will cover that of the burn on my neck. But if not, the neck is what I’m really worried about (I have a V-shaped burn from the sweater I was wearing…sigh). It feels only slightly warm to the touch so I’m not too badly burned (and I know about being sunburned, living in SoCal…XD), and I’ve already put some aloe vera on it (and will continue to do so for the rest of today and into tonight to help it heal), BUT.

I have graduation tomorrow! Luckily for me, my graduation is at night, so I don’t have to worry about getting burned any worse. However, we do take lots of pictures, and I don’t want to look super red.

How do you recommend I cover it? Should I go to the Clinique counter and get some greenish powder and have them show me how to use it? Or is there a way to do it with my normal foundation & powder?

Thanks in advance!

I would suggest just using your regular foundation/powder (again, liberally), and then even applying bronzer (read it in Seventeen ;). In my experience covering up stuff other than the face is kinda difficult. You might try to find a thicker foundation to do the job. Good luck!

Ok, just tried it…the regular stuff worked wonders on my face (will definitely not be able to tell in a photo and probably not even by looking at me), and I didn’t even have to use powder…my skin looked normal just with the foundation. The neck is proving more problematic. It’s covering a bit, but my skin is just too red to look normal with foundation on.

I’m going to wash off the makeup in the shower and then do some experimenting…my mom has a cover stick that might work. Hopefully it’ll fade enough by tomorrow night that it won’t be as hard to cover.

Does someone in your family have darker skin than you? Using their foundation may work better. When I’ve needed to cover stuff up, I use a combination of power and foundation, but it tends to work better if I use a darker shade of foundation. If you cover it all up afterwards with your normal powder or some bronzer, the color difference shouldn’t be noticeable. Take a practice photo or two; the burn probably isn’t as noticeable as you imagine.

corranged-I bought some powder a little while back that’s a shade or two too dark. I’ll see if that works any better. Thanks for the tip!

Several minutes later

WOO HOO!

Found an old-ish cover-stick of my mom’s that works PERFECTLY…I barely have to smudge it in with my fingers and I look normal!(Well, almost…XD)  :)

Awesomeness.

HGFM - one thing I recommend is to NOT do much experimenting tonight while the burn is fresh because you might irritate your skin even more. Take a warm shower, apply more aloe vera (and re-apply as your skin starts to feel dry), and sip water all evening and tomorrow to re-hydrate. If you have any Aleve (or generic) and are able, take those - it will help the swelling.

Thanks for the advice. :)

I’ve figured out what works, so I’m going to wash it all off now in the shower and put some more aloe vera on and just let the skin relax until tomorrow.

I will have to go sit in the sun tomorrow morning for practice, so I’ll have to figure out what to do for that. sigh

Immediately take some ibuprofen and use Aloe on the burn. You should be able to tone it down some even in one day. The Ibuprofen reduces the inflammation. Keep it up every 4-6 hours for the first day.

Find clear zinc oxide for tomorrow.

From - another fair haired sunburn victim who is old enough to know better :)

As a fair skinned person who got more than her fair share of sunburns, please, please use sunblock always, even in the shade. I’ve had both a melanoma and a carcinoma removed.

mathmom-usually I’m very sunburn-conscience, especially growing up in SoCal the way I did and being as fair-skinned as I am. I have a huge bottle of Banana Boat sitting on my desk. XD

I dunno why I didn’t think about it today. :(

I am, however, feeling much better since I showered and lathered up with Aloe Vera.

Speaking of which, time for more. :)

Please do not experiment with your sunburned skin too much. And if the makeup does not cover it completely, there is always Photoshop
Have fun at your graduation tomorrow!

Happy graduation, HGFM! =)

(I did the same thing… Got completely sunburned just before my high school graduation. Didn’t have to wear blush, though!)

XD aibarr. I never wear blush anyways, but a very good point!!!

Ahhh. The sunburn calmed down quite a bit overnight…I think I’ll definitely be able to cover it up tonight. ^_^
