Covid -- Additional Booster?

Few Americans have received the latest vaccines against the coronavirus: Just over 7 percent of adults and 2 percent of children had received the shot as of Oct. 14, according to a survey presented on Thursday to scientific advisers to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The uptake is weak even among those most at risk of severe illness.

Personal anecdotes… Vaccine fatigue? My very much pro-vaxx husband who is formally in the high risk category, said that he felt like a baby! So. Many. Shots! Flu, Covid, pneumonia, RSV! Oh my.

Also, Paxlovid worked so well for him, he is convinced that if he gets seriously ill, the drug will come to the rescue again.

We still plan on getting Pfizered before the holidays.

Some people may be waiting to get it a little closer to the winter holidays.

Some people may be waiting for a specific brand (e.g. Novavax).

GD’s pediatrician didn’t have them yet when she went in for her flu shot.

Just went for my annual doc visit with my internist. 2 years ago she would not see patients in-person unless they had been vaccinated for covid. Last week she said her opinion on the vaccinations has changed… she and many of her colleagues are telling patients not to get any more boosters. Her explanation: over the past two years many double and triple boosted patients still got covid (2 or 3 times)And had bad outcomes. She is also seeing an increase in cardiac problems, more than normal, and believes there is a link. I was kind of surprised at the switch since she was so dogmatic about getting vaccinated in the beginning. It will be interesting to see what the fallout is in the next 5 years.

It seems that some medical professionals are now comfortable enough to voice their professional assessment - even if it is counter to the given narrative from the CDC. It takes guts and I appreciate and admire them.

I know of five young docs (either in residency or in actual practice) and none of them are getting this ver of the vax. They all were vaxxed previously when their hospital/health center required it, but the requirement has been dropped.

My PCP recommended covid vax end of Oct, flu shot mid-November, and said to wait on RSV shot. I got my Novavax shot yesterday after searching around for it. I will probably get at least some version of the flu shot in a few weeks, and will probably/maybe? hold off on RSV vax for now. My H had an appt for Novavax, but in a bait-and-switch Rite-Aid didn’t have it (and hadn’t had it since their initial shipment). So he got Pfizer AND senior flu shot AND RSV. I wouldn’t have done all three at once – I don’t even do two at once.

California passed AB-2098. It would allow the state to pull a medical license if the provider was spreading ‘misinformation’ regarding COVID vaccines. I wonder if this can still be applied to this practitioners who stray off the official CDC/AMA/ blah blah blah script. Rather terrifying if you ask me.

‘AB-2098, which has been endorsed by the California Medical Association, defines misinformation as “false information that is contradicted by contemporary scientific consensus contrary to the standard of care.”’

'But some doctors, including Dr Monica Gandhi, associate chief of HIV infectious diseases and global medicine at UCSF, worry it doesn’t consider how quickly that information and data changes.

“This virus has been studied more than any other infection in history with 87,000 papers published on COVID by Feb. 2021, so information is changing all the time," she said. ’

We just got back from a tour in France and had to show our vaccine card at the start of the tour. They weren’t interested in the latest vaccine but the earlier ones. And no one on the tour came down with covid-yay!

sure, we can speculate all we want, but that’s just it, speculation.

Just checked online CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid and Costco in my community, and same-day covid vax appointments are available for all covid 3 manufacturers, (including Novavax).

I have no regrets for having gotten my 7th covid shot in early Oct. I feel it protected me and kept me from getting covid, even while mingling with many out of town wedding guests and S and DIL and her family.

Our primary physician office does not have Covid vaccines. Don’t ask me why. They claim it’s because they weren’t sure if insurance would pay, so they vaccinated their office staff, once insurance paid for those, they ordered more. So my husband and I had checkups, got our flu shots but now we have to go to a pharmacy to get our Covid shots.

I scheduled our shots for Friday. At Walgreens. Now I hear that the pharmacists have scheduled a 3 day walkout.

I guess I’ll call Walgreens later today. :pensive:

We have been back for 3 days now from our trip to Europe. So far H and I have stayed healthy despite the crowds and flying. I was happy we got our flu, Covid and RSV shots a couple of weeks out from traveling.

Did you mask on public transportation and on the planes?

Covid vaccines require special refrigeration for storage which most docs are not going to invest in.

Novavax does not require super freezers.

However, the financial risk is now on the providers to stock the correct amount at the higher commercial prices ($120-130 per dose), unlike before when the government bought bulk amounts at cheap prices ($10-$30 per dose) that were given to providers at no charge (many ended up being wasted, but the cost per dose given was still lower than current commercial prices).

So the providers are likely to estimate use on the lower side to avoid buying more than they will use.

We did not mask while traveling although we carried masks in case we felt we needed to. The first couple of days we were in Porto H felt a little congested, but after taking zinc a couple of times he felt fine for the remainder of our trip.

I think it’s more likely that our provider doesn’t want to be stuck with Covid vaccines that it can’t dispense than any storage issues. They’ve had Covid vaccines in the past. I think it’s likely that we will get the song and dance that doses are on order. But you can go to the pharmacy! Since I want to get our vaccines, I made arrangements.

I would be interested what the demand is for Covid vaccines where I am. I am hearing from friends and family that they aren’t that interested.

We will get ours because we are traveling. I didn’t anticipate a walkout at Walgreens though.
