How much a CPA makes varies widely based on region, firm, level of expertise and supervisory responsibilities. In the bay area of Ca or NY city you may start as high as 65k entry level while in the midwest you may start at only 45k. Here is what compensation looks like. I vouch for this as I work in public accounting.

Keep in mind that most people drop out of public before the manager level. Very few college kids can really work 60+ hours a week. Most drop out and move into industry in a few years after the public experience. I think it is funny when you run into these college kids that talk about becoming partner. Only 1-2% of entry level staff will ever make partner. I have personally seen partners get sued (we live in a litigious society), divorced (they work too much), spend weeks on the road for audits, work 18 hours straight, and have major health problems from stress.

That being said…being smart has nothing to do with doing well in public. It is like 80% effort 20% intelligence. Being likable is more important than being smart.
