CPP vs UCR for mechanical engineering vs UCSC for electrical engineering

Hi,

My son was admitted to both CPP and UCR for mechanical engineering. He also got into UCSC for electrical engineering. He is passionate about engineering and wanted a more broad/general major so he applied to EE for some schools, and to mechanical for others. He has a slight preference for mechanical but would totally be ok with EE.

We leave in the Bay Area, about 40 min from UCSC.

W are looking for advice - pros/cons for each.

Is he likely to consider changing to a different engineering major?

If so, take a look at what engineering majors each school offers, and how difficult (GPA wise, admission process) it may be to change into each other engineering major that may be of interest.

Sounds to me like MechE fits him better…then it just depends on which campus he prefers.

If he has a specific interest, you might check it out as well. For example, UCR is one of few schools with an ecoCAR team. So if I were interested in automotive, I might give it the nod. I’m sure it has other focus areas as will CPP. So check clubs and curriculums - does he have a specific interest that one school might have a little bit more exposure to than the other?

I assume also both have been visited.

Best of luck.

Since UCSC doesn’t have a Mech E major at all, if it’s likely he wants to do Mech E, the other schools would be better choices.
