Answer is C: Were not the carefree people they might appear to be. Can someone explain why? Thanks in advance :slight_smile:

The Bottom’s residents were laughing BUT there was PAIN underlying their laughter–they appeared to be carefree (laughing!) but they weren’t so carefree (PAIN!).
