CR question

Essentially a blues artist, Robert Cray plays music influenced by progressive rock, yet he remains ______ the blues tradition.

C. distinct from
D. grounded in

Why is the answer D and not C?

I also have another question:

“This, too, seemed interesting: a technique literally 400 years old invented at the height of the early colonial era, the Age of Exploration, now being employed to make visible the most advanced geographies in a new age of discovery. Indeed, what might Mercator have thought were it suggested to him that his scheme would one day be used to plot landscapes so far from terrestrial in aspect as to reflect back, in their magnificent alienness, the very idea of an old and exhausted Earth?”

What does “plot” most nearly mean?
The answer is “chart”. Another choice was “conceive”. What makes “conceive” wrong?

the word YET is key. Although he is influenced by progressive rock (not traditional), he remains grounded in blues tradition.

first of all, collegeboard makes it so that almost all answer choices could fit. Thus, if you do not already, don’t look at answer choices without guessing beforehand. If you read it neutrally, “his scheme would one day be used to plot landscapes so far from terrestrial in aspect as to reflect back the very idea of an old and exhausted earth?”. Here, it can be seen that plot is used in a more “physical” sense, since its his scheme that would be used to make it occur. i don’t know if i am making sense or not…i mean, conceive is wrong because he has already conceived of the scheme and he’s using that scheme to put (chart/plot) landscaes far from terrestrial in aspect…etc.

The answer is chart as in to survey land.

Ex: I needed to chart the land before I moved out west (not a great usage, but you get the idea).
