CR Question

From the 2008 Practice Test:

"Mrs. Deverell felt slighted and wounded; going home she was so preoccupied that she passed the wife of the landlord of The Volunteer without seeing her. “I wouldn’t expect Alderhurst people to speak to a barkeep’s wife,” the woman told everyone in the saloon bar. “Even though it was our Gram who laid her husband out when he died.” [All of their kindnesses were remembered and brooded over; any past kindness Mrs. Deverell had done – and they were many – only served to underline the change which had come over her.]

Lines 40-43 (“All of… her”) suggest which of the following about the customers in the saloon bar?

A. They do not recall those occaisons when Mrs. Deverell was kind to them.

D. They are more generous toward themselves than they are toward Mrs. Deverell.

Why is the answer D?

I got this one wrong too. But it’s D because this line right here, “Even though it was our Gram who laid her husband out when he died.” is an example of one their kindness.
And this one here,“[All of their kindnesses were remembered and brooded over; any past kindness Mrs. Deverell had done – and they were many – only served to underline the change which had come over her.]” is saying that their kindness were pretty much rememered, while the kindness Mrs. Deverell had done kind of faded away, or is not as important.

Answer choice D says they were more generous towards themselves, meaning they only remember the good that they had done, and don’t really care about Mrs. Deverll’s kindness.

I don’t quite comprehend it but choice A is too absolute and is not mentioned in the text. Also note that the text implicitly displays a comparison there. (all of their kindness blah blah blah and the kindness Mrs. D has done blah blah blah) So I would readily guess D.

they do recall the occasions when Mrs. Deverall was kind to them, since “any past kindness Mrs. Deverell had done – and they were many – only served to underline the change which had come over her”, although they are more generous to themselves because they acknowledge their own kindnesses while ignoring her’s.
