Craig and Galen Brown Foundation - 2020

@AeroEngMom. I think TXRunningMom is correct, there is no separate application process for the Brown Scholarship (but not 100% certain). I know for sure is my son did not upload any recommendation letter for Brown scholarship specifically. He uploaded one letter for Engineering Honors, which Brown scholarship used and asked for a second recommendation letter in the first email they sent. So, don’t worry, your son did not overlook anything.

I know for sure there will be interviews in January since my son had to postpone his interview and was told the interview will be in January but they don’t have set dates yet … so your son probably will hear something from them beginning of the next year.

@ATTX , Wow! That is a full day! I wonder what they will do with them that whole time? That is a different format for sure. Last year, Mr. Brown talked for about an hour, then the interviews were for maybe 1-2 hours or so with a lunch to eat when the kids had breaks from their interviews. After your interview, you left. Keep us posted about how this year goes!

Sure. Will keep you all posted.

Anyone willing to comment on how the Brown interview process went today, 12/20? I am assuming this is the first round and there will be other dates. Can anyone share a different date they are interviewing?

The rescheduled interview will be on 1/10. My son will fly from Dallas/Ft. Worth with 3 other kids to Houston. Any tips for the interview from the current/past Brown scholars or their parents? Thanks.

@ATTX, all the best to your son for his interview. Did you hear anything from the group who interviewed on 12/20?

If I haven’t heard from the Foundation by now, I’m not under consideration anymore, right? I contacted A&M a while ago and asked when I would be notified if I was selected for the next stage (aka interviews), but I never got a reply from A&M.

Did you receive an initial reach out by the Foundation or A&M at any point between November and December? I’m assuming you checked your spam folder.

@tp3208 , are you a National Merit Finalist? Being NMF is a prerequisite for the Brown scholarship. If you are, did you go to the National Scholars invite last summer? I think that helps get you on the scholarship office radar by showing interest.

Did you or your kids ask for a letter from Brown foundation for school excuse? My son’s school said they need “a letter on letter head with his name and the date after he has the interview” to excuse his absence tomorrow. I thought it’d be awkward if he is the only one asking for it.

My son just texted me about 2 hours ago said he and 3 other kids interviewed today are all awarded with Brown Scholarship. I don’t have details of the interview to update yet and he won’t be home after 9 pm (flight is delayed 1.5 hrs due to storm, hope it won’t be cancelled).

Here is a question for TXRunningMom or anyone with Brown scholars kids … Do you know if he can have both Brown Scholarship and Presidents Endowed Scholarship, or just one? Thanks.

Yes, they can have the Brown Scholarship, National Merit Scholarship, and President’s Endowed Scholarship.

@ATTX, Congratukations to you and your son!

@ATTX, what is your son’s major?

@val0822. Thank you. As his major, it should be aerospace. However, I don’t know how but his and his brother’s majors are switched … so “officially” his major is CS.

My family were finally able to have a somewhat coherent conversation … we got up at 4 am yesterday and did not get to bed until 2:00 this morning (return flight was REALLY late because of the storm) so I’m fuzzy all day.

Here is the info we have for this year’s Brown Scholarship:

700 students selected by A&M for the Brown Scholarship consideration. Mr. Brown and his wife personally read through them all (image the time and effort they had to put in), made invitations to 90-100 kids, and 50-55 scholarships will be awarded.

Among the 4 kids came from DFW to be interviewed yesterday, except my son, the other 3 were all new invites and recently notified. There were 6 “local” kids (assume from around Houston or Austin) interviewed yesterday also. More were interviewed today. It sounds like the interviews are still on-going, so don’t give up hopes yet if you are still waiting.

My son said Mr. Brown, Ms. Matthew, and his interviewer were all extremely nice, so tell your kids (or yourself) there is nothing to be nervous about. I was glad that I asked TxRunningMom about the attire … yes, please wear a complete set of suit (you don’t want to be the only one wearing jeans). After the interview, A&M has moved to my son’s top choice.

I was really surprised when my son told me that Mr. Brown said he’ll get a “full scholarship” because I did not know there are different kinds of scholarships offered by Brown foundation.

Thank you for all your helps and good wishes! I really appreciate them.

@ATTX, congratulations!! I knew TAMU would move up to #1 after your son met Mr. Brown! Scholarships stack with NM so if he has inside or outside scholarships, he gets to keep them. Brockman requires you to decline all other scholarships. And in reference to your other housing post, my daughter loves Mosher and it has been a great environment for her.

@ATTX, thank you for detailed information. So glad for your son.

@ATTX, my son got email today for interview on this Friday. He is flying in the morning and coming back in the evening. Did your son take a backpack or anything else? Any suggestions for my son. Thanks in advance

@val0822, congratulations!

My son only brought a very small pack with him. If your son is flying United, he can only bring a bag no bigger than 9"x10"x17" without upgrading his tickets. My son really regretted that he did not bring a bag bigger enough to accommodate the manila folder the foundation gave him. Don’t forget to wear a suit. Everyone was so nice there, so tell him to relax and have fun. I hope his flight will be better than my son’s :).

Do you know how many will be flying out with him?
