Another Semifinalist from the same district stated he was contacted for an interview for the Brown scholarship but never completed his A&M admissions. Surely the school wouldn’t be forwarding names of those who didn’t complete the admissions process, right? It’s my understanding that they sent 700 applicant names. Did I misunderstand?
@AeroEngMom. From I gathered, A&M only selects from the admitted students to send to Brown foundation. But the student doesn’t have to commit to A&M to be invited. So if by “never completed his A&M admissions”, you meant he didn’t complete his application and thus can’t be admitted by A&M, then I don’t think he would have received an interview invitation.
@val0822. My son got another email from Ms. Matthews telling him to sign the acceptance letter after he decides to attend A&M. So that’s what we will be doing. Has your son received his offer letter?
If by not completing his admissions meaning his completed his application but did not commit to go to A&M, then the other semi finalist from the district is going through what everyone else is going through with the Brown interview process who hasn’t committed to attend A&M.
That student would not have received an invitation to interview otherwise because A&M sends the Brown foundation the NMSF applications that have been screened for fit for the Brown and then the foundation selects from those applications.
@ATTX, my son have received the offer letter. We are planning to visit A&M as part of Brown Scholar next month and then he will make his final decision.
Any chance there are still more invites coming out? We haven’t heard anything.
@macarthur. Maybe try to contact Brown foundation (http://www.brownfound.org/) to find out whether there will be more interviews? Please let us know what you find out if you do decide to contact them. Good luck.
I’d love to know also. This was a scholarship mine was hoping to get a shot at as a semifinalist as they talked it up at all of the sessions with the semifinalists.
There have apparently been 98 offers made for the Brown scholarship, a significant increase over last year’s offers. This fall there were 47 enrolled Brown scholars and that was the biggest group so far, but they’re saying that next fall there might end up being 70-some, obviously depending on how many accept the offer. (I do have the impression that they are finished making offers.)
@bctnln1059 , thanks for sharing the information. How did you get this information.
From a current Brown scholar who got it at a meeting.
thank you!
Just curious … does your Brown scholarship show up in the financial portal with 2 entries – one is Brown scholarship and the other is Brown supplemental scholarship? I was kinda surprised to see that.
@macarthur , there maybe more interviews. my DS (OOS) just did one over the phone this week (postponed from last week due to schedule conflict). However, the invite was received end of December.
I got an email saying that there will be no more invitations. Everyone that’s going to be interviewed has been notified.
I am new all the Brown Scholar information (We don’t have a lot). Maybe someone can answer my questions? Does a offer come in writing? If so, how soon after the student speaks to Mr. Brown? Does a Brown scholarship automatically put you in Engineering Honors? Do you have to apply to University Honors separately? Should a student do both? Why would they want to do both? Thx!
In our case, Mr. Brown told my son during his interview that he is awarded the full scholarship then we receive the letter in about a week.
From what I learned, it does not automatically put you in Engineering Honors. But Mr. Brown can definitely help you to get in. One of the students in my son’s group did not apply to EH and Mr. Brown said he’s going to “fix the situation”.
You do need to apply UH separately, just like applying for EH. But I believe the deadline has past already.
As why do you want to do both, I’m not quite sure … according to many here on the forum, UH seems to have a lot of extra non-academic obligations. Maybe someone else can offer more insights regarding this?
At least at the beginning you have to choose between EH and UH. To get into UH you have to apply UH housing first, and put down a $75 housing deposit. But if you want to do EH it is natural that you want to live with EH housing. So at least for the first year, you enroll in EH. After you get in, you then can apply UH if you want, and keep living with EH housing.
It is required that the Brown scholar recipients to visit TAMU as indicated in the interview. Does anyone know if the cost of transportation for the visit is covered by TAMU or the recipient has to pay it by himself for OOS applicant?
I don’t believe that is correct. You can be in EH and UH programs if you are accepted into them both, even for freshman. You are required to live in UH dorm for UHP during freshman year. EHP does not require you to live in any specific dorm.
As for the cost for a campus tour, you may want to contact Brown foundation directly to find out if they will cover OOS expense.
