I slacked off a lot during high school. I wasn’t particularly motivated and didn’t always turn in my home work. My ACT score was a measley 22 (which of I didn’t study for…) I chose working part-time starting at the age of 16 over extra cirriculars starting the summer before my sophomore year. A wrench was thrown into my senior year when I moved out of state to VA where I found out most of my trasncript would not transfer, putting my 2007 graduation in jeopardy, which led me to move back to the midwest to finish high school.

I’m now a Virginia resident again and would LIKE to go to Wililam&Mary, James Madison or UVirginia for International Studies with a Japaense minor. These are difficult schools and with my current stats are more or less impossible to get into. However, my academic strengths have always lied in social studies, english and other such liberal arts studies.
I’m currently enrolled in the local community college system with an intent to transfer with much better grades.

My future career interests include teaching ESL overseas (perhaps in DoDDS schools) and Foreign Service. I’m also really wanting to study abroad for a semester or more.

I’m really looking to cash in on the fact that I am already bilingual and bicultural in Japanese to further my college career. I already have experience as a translator while working for a U.S company with Japanese parentage.

So I guess my ultimate question is,

assuming my GPA is vastly improved in community college, is it possible to get into the afromentioned schools? How much does my personal background count during the selection process? Should I take SAT now that I’m in VA?
