I suck at writing. It doesnt flow and gets quite redundant. Any tips?

i say read a lot of difficult material to get a good grasp on syntax, word usage, sentence formations, etcetera. i’ve been writing, speaking, and reading english for only 7 years. that was the strategy i used. also, when writing, write ONLY what you know and what you feel. start by writing simple, conversational english. don’t use words you’re not comfortable using, because they would only sound awkward (even though you may not think so while writing).

i’ll be happy to answer your questions and to talk about my experience on AIM: gianstwin.

Redundancy - I have that problem when a) I’m not interested in the topic b) I don’t have enough research for the topic or c) words. The first one is kind of hard since if you’re writing on a boring topic, there’s not much you can do but grit your teeth and go through it. That’s often the problem with flow too - it’s hard to get into, therefore hard to move around within the topic. Whenever I find word redundancy, I eliminate the word for a week or two, only using it when there is nothing else to use. Like, I found in my personal/journal writing I use “and” a lot - it bugged me. So, I wouldn’t let myself use “and” in my journal writing for a week, and now I don’t use it so much in a wasteful manner. That can sometimes work.

Also, like gianscolere1 said, reading helps a lot. It’s not just reading though, it’s paying attention to the writing style more specifically. Any words you don’t know, look up. That helps eliminate word redundancy also. For flow, sometimes it can be hard to pick up in writing (especially older literature if you don’t understand what they’re saying or what is going on), poetry can help.

Really, I just say practice writing about yourself and personal topics first. Keep a journal or internet blog (you don’t need to tell anyone) and practice writing. Write about your day, and then go back and edit it. I know it sounds weird and boring, but by fixing the way you freewrite, even about yourself, will make it easier once you write formal papers.

Also, remember: You tend to be harder on yourself than other people.

Sorry if that is a lot. I’ve just been in the same position and that’s the sort of stuff that helped me. Feel free to pm me for anything else. :)

Thank u much. i will definately try that. I know what you mean about using "and’ all the time. I just sounds so perfect until you read the whole paper.
