Craziest things students have done after being deferred??

What are some of the craziest things that deferred students have done to demonstrate interest to get into their top choice??

Have parents send an angry e-mail telling the admissions office of how great their child is and how he/she so greatly deserves to attend the university.

As told in The Gatekeepers: Carter Bays (Wesleyan '97) He got waitlisted, so he attempted to “prove that I am worthy of attending your school” by sending the office of admissions a new postcard every day for weeks. I think they were along the lines of Reason #X to accept Carter Bays…Office staff members began to race to the mailbox to get his latest note; eventually, they vouched for him and pushed his name to the top of the waitlist pile. One of his first jobs after graduation was Staff Writer for the David Letterman show and he went on to co-create How I Met Your Mother.

My older brother’s roommate was deferred from Yale in 2011 but it was his #1 choice. They lived in Connecticut (Choate) so from December until March every other Friday he would ordered cookie and brownie platters to be sent to the admission office. On top of the lid was alway be a card with funny and serious reason why he wanted to go to Yale and why Yale needs him. Every time there would be a different reason, I believe one of them was “its not pronounced New Haven, its New Heaven.” But there was always a serious reason and mini paragraphs on why he belonged at Yale. A week before decisions came out, he personally delivered a sub platter and the admissions people had a good laugh and thanked him for sending them so much food. In the end, he was accepted in regular decision.

However, I don’t believe he simply got in because he sent food. It was because he was sincere and genuine about it. Also, his stats were very high (2300 SAT with 3.88 GPA). In RD he also got into Wesleyan, Boston College, Dartmouth, Amherst, and SMU.

@BrownParent‌ Loving the references from the book

bump?

Looks like constantly sending gifts and letters to the Admissions office will help your chances.

^ ^ ^ ^
I would wager constant gifts, funny cards, and similar ploys fail more often than they succeed.

All the gimmicks have been done. They’re no longer original now; they’re just annoying.

I would think that it would depend on the frequency of the gimmicks.

Yes, if there are hundreds/thousands of kids every year doing them, that would be annoying (probably why a school like UMich asks some deferred applicants to not send them anything if they don’t ask for it), but if it’s 1-2 a cycle, those kids would stand out.

Adcoms are human. Furthermore, most schools generally are looking for those kids who really love their school.
