Crazy ACT Story

walt, maybe the rule only applies to the main test supervisor (like for the whole test site, not just one room), because they have access to the test booklets before the test.

Let’s see…my essay was the max length with a so-so argument.
12/12 :rolleyes: ACT readers are foos in my opinion. Though I got a 12/12 on the SAT essay too -_- who knows.

lol both times 3.5 pages and both times an 11 essay. = D

awwwwww
If only I had seen this thread 24 hrs earlier…(I wrote small/moderate and 2.5 pgs)

@inspiration08
you gave her bad reports at the end of the test right? like it matters anyway, they can just change it.

good points, but remember that writing does not count too much for anything
focus on getting the best composite you can get by taking practice tests

This thread is very interesting! And if it’s true, it’s pathetic!

My kids’ public schools steer them away from turning in long writing assignments unless there’s a real purpose for all the words. I think they have a very good point – it’s much harder to write a good essay that convincingly gets all your points across in a SHORT space than in a long space. So my kids’ teachers since middle school have taught them to be concise but thorough. Even in college, they’re told shorter is often better.

My kids have been told for years that they are very good writers, and they’re consistently rewarded with high grades on writing assignments – even the ones in college.

But in all cases, their ACT essay scores were above average, not great (8’s-10’s). Their Reading and Writing scores were in all cases 34’s to 36’s – without prep. Essays? Not so much. So, after seeing this thread, I asked them how long their essays were – and sure enough, they were all short-ish!

The one son who just got his ACT scores back yesterday is the best writer of all (in my family, I mean). At least once a semester, a teacher or two from his large public school will call me or email me about what an amazing writer this one son is. I’ve heard several times over the years that this one son is “the best essay writer I have EVER taught.” And so on.

His ACT essay score? A 9.

Not that we’re not okay with the 9. None of us really care. But it has mystified me over the years as to why my kids are so strongly praised for their writing – yet their ACT essay scores don’t show it.

If it’s true that they’re focusing on length … well, that’s pretty disgusting. They hold up this high standard, but it looks like perhaps the essay graders don’t know a good one from a bad one?! yuk.
