I read a guy got some turkey eggs from a mail order place ,and is raising turkeys, and it got me thinking about all the time we have to try wild and crazy things ,now that we are without the kids. For me I am pursuing my fascination with fast trains at night. I get such a rush when they go by, and I love the clickety clack ! I am considering buying a scanner,or CB radio, so I can anticipate their arrival .So what new things are YOU finally trying ?Please keep this G rated .

I lost my job in July, so my new interest is trying to squeeze every last cent out of the grocery bill. I never had time to do this to this extent before, but now I plan our meals around the specials, clip coupons and shop different stores for different items. It is helping us save money, but I keep thinking that maybe I have too much time on my hands.

Any great express trains in your area?Good cheap thrills!!

That is my H with the turkey eggs…I could write a book. The turkey just went for a weekend trip with us to the mountains, because DH didn’t want it to be lonely. Two dogs and a turkey- very romantic. Now it sleeps in the kitchen. Thank god he is giving it away next week (and no, not for thanksgiving dinner).

You just THINK it’s not for dinner…

LOL, one of my kids went to Italy one summer, could not stand seeing the dead rabbits hanging in the windows, due to family rabbit pets!

LOL, erin’s dad!

Crazy New Hobby Since the Nest Emptied: got a job

Crazy New Hobby: home remodeling (aka fixing all the stuff my kids trashed while growing up)

“now I plan our meals around the specials, clip coupons and shop different stores for different items. It is helping us save money, but I keep thinking that maybe I have too much time on my hands.”

It’s so easy to get sucked in. I find myself doing the same thing, but I checked our receipts last month and realized our outgoing for groceries is half of what it was 8 months ago. Now I’m addicted.

fooballmom - Sorry to hear about the job loss. But it sounds like you have found a useful and challenging hobby. Good luck.

The turkey hobby is really funny! That gives me an interesting tidbit if Thanksgiving conversation has a lull.

My strange hobby I guess is continuing CC, even though my youngest/2010 is in college now. Part of it is “payback” for all of the useful info I received. And part of it is just habit, enjoying “meeting” all of the nice families.

Still continuing on CC too, although my youngest is a freshman as well.

My H is now working on a committee in a professional organization he has belonged to for years, so he is attending about 3-4 meetings a month. This isn’t really a hobby, but something he always wanted to do. No need to come home from work & help with homework or writing papers or nagging about college applications! I don’t have to cook dinner on those nights. :D

I do not know if this could be called a “hobby” yet, but it definitely belongs in the “crazy” category: DH recently discovered that he does not like to spend his Friday nights stretched out on the couch in front of the TV. Instead, we head out to a local place where middle-aged techies from MSFT and GOOG unwind.
Another “crazy” hobby courtesy of fare wars between Alaska and Hawaiian: we spent several long weekends in HI recently. I really like the fact that we are no longer dependent on the kids’ sports and school schedules and can take a couple of days of vacation any time.
Pretty soon the snow will blanket our favorite skiing area, and we are looking forward to cross-country skiing on weekends. In the past, DD always had something going on every weekend, so we hardly ever gone to the mountains.

Oops, some of the stuff I just posted is at least PG rated. The G-rated stuff like gardening and home improvement has been going on in our house forever.
(and please pardon my iPhonese).

I noticed that too, our weekends are free, no worrying about picking up someone from a football game or friend’s house or making sure a school project/paper was done etc.

It was almost like a “don’t I have to be somewhere?” feeling on a Saturday AM & then it turned out well, no I don’t! Or the school bus driving by our house first day of school this year (after about 20 years of stopping here) I almost thought the driver made a mistake by not stopping! Even the dog looked puzzled! ( he’s a herding breed)

I took up golf. Bought some clubs at Dick’s that were on clearance and have been practicing. Since my family no longer needs me - I am leaving the day after Thanksgiving for Florida. Gonna spend 6 days with my Dad and he is gonna be my golf coach.
He is an excellent golfer btw and pleased with my new hobby.
Another bonus to being an empty nester - I can now justify 2 trips per winter to Florida to be with my Dad!

Bunsen burner- what is PG about your post?

Dancing to 80s music in a lounge with alcohol drinks on the menu. I have not seen that in G-rated movies. Since I have not seen any fights or heard any swearing in this place, a PG-13 rating is probably not warranted. :)

Gee whiz, that sounds so fun…I have never done anything like that !My H would never do that-he doesn’t dance, unless we’re at a wedding and it’s a Hora or a little slow dance. Raunchy? Never!I do love that movie “Dirty Dancing” !
