No brainer. Good luck.
I have been able to go to watch my daughter play for spring break every year but one. This year I also went for senior night (last home game). She doesn’t want to walk in her graduation program, so I’m not going to that. However, now she’ll probably be in the NCAA tournament, so I’ll go for that, and if they win return a week later for the finals that happen to be in a nearby city.
Some parents go EVERY weekend, to every game, and from NY or Maryland to Florida. I don’t feel like I’m spending too much to only go to a few special games.
So glad you’re going! Agree with @stradmom , tho, let him know you’re coming.
I never surprise our kids with visits. Their schedules and ours are too busy to risk the chance if not having much time to spend together. I think surprises are greatly over-rated. I like to plan with their input. It makes for happier, richer shared time and events.
I wouldn’t worry about letting him know. What an awesome surprise. And conspiring with his partner can alleviate most of the other issues like what night is best. And even if he has a cast party or something who cares. You will be spending time with him two weeks later for graduation. Go for it.
The best things in life are not things. They are eexperiences and memories. Go! You’ll never get this time again. But I agree with Himom, let your S know so that he has free time to spend with you.
What play is it? Maybe I’ll go too!
Glad to hear you’re going! I know I wouldn’t have hesitated, but we tend to be impulsive with travel and love it.
I’m with the group that warns against surprising him. My own guys love the anticipation of a visit far more than they like surprises. It’s a nice feeling in itself being able to look forward to something. (We’re not Surprise Party folks either so YMMV.)
It would probably be an awesome surprise for him to get a phone call saying you were coming … you don’t have to surprise him the day of … AND GO!!! You want to and you can afford it. What’s the money for if not to make people happy?
some of the greatest pleasures in our life have been watching our kids do their chosen activities. I hope you love it!
I hope you go.
I made reservations today to travel to a tournament my daughter may not even play in! It’s likely, but something could happen this weekend that would mean her team wasn’t invited. My other daughter happened to call right when I was looking for tickets, I asked her when she’d be home and she told me the 14th because she was going to her boyfriend’s graduation. Oh, too bad, I said, I was going to ask if you wanted to go to your sister’s game. OH, I don’t have to go to the graduation! I can go to Florida! Of course I can go. So we’re going, and if she doesn’t make the tournament, we’ll have two days on the beach. The worst part is we have to fly Frontier - like taking the Greyhound bus!
Talked to his partner, he said DS would be thrilled, and he thinks a surprise will be great. They don’t have a full schedule, so there will be time to visit the next day. I decided to stay 2 nights, the airfare was even a little lower.
Thanks for helping me get up the gumption to do it. DH is not an impulsive person, he thinks this kind of thing is nuts, and my best friend is so frugal she’d never spend the money to do something like this. Sometimes I just need a little “reality confirmation” from the big wide world.
(Won’t be bringing DS’ s stuff back, he’s staying in his college town permanently.)

Hmm, my first thought is it’s good that you’ve found an inexpensive airline between Point A and B and are able to come up with neat “excuses” to use them. Consider it practice for the future.
(Says the mom who already uses various excuses to head states away to see her guys. Later this week we will be taking my med school lad’s car back to our state to get inspected so he doesn’t have to do it - pretty impossible with his schedule and being in the wrong state. We’ve flown to his college to see my youngest in a play too…)
UPDATE: I did it, and it was awesome! DS was SO surprised, and genuinely happy that I’d come. Couldn’t believe that we’d pulled it off without him even getting half a clue. We had a really nice visit, and we’re all looking forward to our longer visit (with DH) for graduation (in just 10 days - that’s why this was such a goofy thing to do, I’m actually heading back on the 6th!)
I stayed with a friend and she and I had a blast catching up, too. One of tbose friends you can not talk to for a couple of years, and when you do, you pick up right where you left off like no time has passed (and discover weird things, like you have the same phones, cars, new hobbies, etc. - “twin sistah from another mistah”).
And the play was fun, and DS was great in it (totally unbiased opinion here…).
I honestly think this was one of the best things I’ve ever done. So again, thanks guys!
Thank you for the update! I’m so glad you went.
Sweet story. Loved it.
Life is short. We should all do more of this.
Wonderful!!!
How did you reveal yourself to your S???
