Just finished reading Crazy U. What a great read. Story of a dad trying to get his kid into college. The kid just wants to “major in beer and paint his school name on his chest at football games”. He ends up at Big State U (U of Virginia) and is very happy.

Very good critique of the process and hilarious to boot. Fascinating that at UVirginia you can major in History without taking US or European survey class or English without taking Shakespeare.

A must read for any parent going through this madness.

Many high school students who took AP exams were able to advance out of taking such survey classes by scoring a 4 or better. That’s one common reason I’ve observed for many undergrad history majors skipping such classes to take more specialized intermediate/advanced courses in their specialization of interest(s) instead.

As for English literature, there’s many different branches with some regarding Shakespeare as more relevant than others. For instance, someone whose interests as an English lit major focuses on American Southern Writers like William Faulkner may not find Shakespeare to be very relevant to his/her specialization.

It is entertaining, but ONLY valuable on that account. It is almost entirely about how a clueless parent ends up offering little to no guidance to an underachieving child. The worst is that Ferguson ends up where he started, namely clueless. Only change is that be believes having learned how it works.
