I saw the product “Crea Clip” on Shark Tank the other night and thought about getting it so I wouldn’t have to go in to get my hair cut. I normally only get my hair cut 2-4 times a year at Great Clips and am not someone who enjoys the social aspect of getting my hair done. Now, with Covid-19, I thought maybe it would be great to get this device. Has anyone tried it? Any pros/cons to share?
Still requires a certain amount of agility and courage. Not for all-thumbs me.
No for me… I don’t think I would be able to get it right, even if I didn’t have layers. The price of it at some of the less expensive places is in the ballpart of the cost of a Great Clips haircut, though, so if that’s the baseline of comparison, I guess it couldn’t hurt to try.
I think it’s a great idea though I haven’t tried it. Cutting hair is not rocket science and only requires a bit of practice. I went to beauty school in the late 70s and have been cutting hair (in home) ever since. No haircut (from any source) is worth more than a few dollars. I remember when the Farrah Fawcett layered haircut was all the rage. We were taught how to pick up the hair in sections above the head and cut them all to the same length. The instructor said it would be easier to ask the patron to bend over and rubber band the hair into a single pony tail and cut straight across in five seconds but, of course, no one would pay for that. This clip appears to be using a similar principle to enable DIY-ers to get a great result at home. I say, go for it! With a little practice, you will probably get a fine cut and save yourself/friends/family so much money.
Now I gotta go look it up. I cut my own hair all the time (my thick hair hides a lot of faults).
Thanks @katliamom @Groundwork2022
@ChoatieMom Great info. I think I’d be the only one in the family to use it and not a huge savings, but I think I’d prefer it to going in to get a cut if I could figure out how to get it to look the way I want. I’m not super picky about hair. I got the clippers out to give my husband a couple hair cuts since March which seems to be working fine. I’m curious if he will want me to continue once the hair salons are open again. There are lots of tutorials on YouTube about how to use it and I think my D or H would help me out. Funny- D is amazing at Calculus/Physics/writing essays, playing violin, but as a lefty, she sometimes struggles with using scissors!
@gouf78 if you check it out, report back what you think. I don’t think I like the “v” shape in the back, but prefer a more blunt cut—-I’m wondering how easy it is to do it that way.
I’m still thinking about it. The covid 19 angle may push me to try it.
In my short research session I don’t think it would work for me personally.
The consensus is it is best for longer hair without layers already. And straighter your hair the easier it is (mine has lots of wave) I cut layers in already (my hair is forgiving).
You can do shorter hair but it might take another person because it’s hard to see what you’re doing.
It might work for me just to have the clip though to hold my hair. Not sure but not worth the price for just that. Maybe I’ll get a potato chip clip from the dollar store LOL.
One video I watched did end up with the “V” in the back but another swipe with the creaclip (in another turn and move) turned it into the conventional curve in the back very quickly. Very pretty.
Need to watch videos to get the look you want. Seems to be a lot of tricks to get good results. Like cutting hair at a diagonal 75 degrees (from the look) to get a feathered look rather than just cutting straight across. And cut your hair dry so the clip doesn’t slip. Bottom line is that it has a learning curve.
I got a library book on “cutting your own hair” about 40 years ago and I’ve cut my own ever since. I do it because I learned that curly hair needs to be cut dry so that the cut follows the natural curl. I’ve hated every time I’ve ventured into a salon because by the time my hair dries I spend at least a week with scissors correcting it. It’s not rocket science (and it’s only hair).
Sold. No Crea clip for me now. Thanks @gouf78. I always start cheap and work my way up, and only if I have to.
@gouf78 @ChoatieMom Ha! I like the way you think. I’m still considering it. I might be persuaded if discounted. Maybe there will be a holiday sale I can see it being a better buy if I knew someone in person who cut hair and could train me to use on my hair. Maybe the YouTube videos might work if I can find one that has similar hair and wants similar style.
No layers for me- the outer hair covers the gray- well, white for my dark blond hair- at the temples! I trust my local Great Clips- and the lady who did a great job will be there. I have gone about every two months, get it shorter than best and let it grow until it bothers me at my brows or neck.
@wis75 Your hair maintenance seems similar to mine, but I go to Great Clips more like every 4-6 months. So, the Crea Clip would not really be a huge money saver, but I do like the idea of the convenience and germ factor especially with Covid-19. I haven’t heard what procautions Great Clips is making when they are able to reopen in our state.
I hadn’t thought about this in ages. My freshman year a friend had heard of this and three of us tried it. My friends’ hair turned out adorable but mine was a mess. They had thick curly hair, I have fine barely wavy hair. After trying to get it to feather out for a week or so I had a sorority sister who was handy with scissors give me a shoulder length bob and went back to curling the ends.
@dragonmom I saw that it had been around for awhile and was surprised I had never heard of it until I saw it on an old “Shark Tank”. So…mixed reviews from you?
Yes, mixed reviews. Let us know if you try it!
@dragonmom i emailed CreaClip for a coupon and they sent me a code for 10 percent off so I took the plunge and bought it! I just kept thinking it would be fun to try. I plan to repost after I experiment with it. The local Great Clips seem to have a good system for social distancing and hair cuts. They already had a sign in online prior to covid outbreak and my son checked in…was given a 140 or so minute wait time, went about the right time, checked in at a table set up outside…waited about 6 feet or so apart under an awning from others waiting and probably got in within 10 min.

My crea clip arrived in the mail today and I plan on trying it this weekend–maybe H, S19 or D21 will help me if needed.
Woo hoo. Tell us what you think. Inquiring minds want to know.
@katliamom I just finished giving myself a hair cut with the crea clip I like it! I have medium-long shoulder length hair, so I thought I might need to have someone help me cut it, but I was able to do it all by myself. I was conservative and only took about an inch. I did the 3 layer cut from the tutorial on youtube. My D said she didn’t notice a difference, but I can feel a bit of the dead weight off. H and S thought the back was straight. I am not super picky about my hair and have the theory that it will grow back. I usually only get it cut a couple times a year at Great Clips, so not a huge money-saver, but it was fun to do it myself. I think it would be fun to cut other people’s hair too, but don’t know anyone who would be interested. My S only trusts a trained stylist and goes to Great Clips. My H has a 1.5 shaver cut all around which I helped with during Covid-19 shut down, but he will return to Great Clips…and D refuses to cut her super long hair. This would have been great when the kids were younger. I think this may be my go-to from now on?
@ChoatieMom I think your comment on the Farrah Fawcett and ponytail cut really helped me decide to get the crea clip and try it at home. I just wanted a bit of layer/framing around the face and I’m happy with the hair cut I did by myself today
@1Lotus – wow, you did layers, too? Impressed!
