I love this and had to share. These two Canadian kids decided to make a ‘hit song’ in only 8 hours. To show how most Top 40 music is just a repackaged formula. Their youtube video went viral and now Gene Simmons has contacted them. I have to say, the song they created sounds like the real McCoy! I also learned something about music composition watching this :)

It was interesting and clever. All formula, all on a computer. I guess if you want a top 40 song, that will do the trick.

Gotta contrast it with what my kid does. She is a singer/songwriter and has an EP coming out and plays gigs in NYC of her original music. The way it is created is the opposite as in that video, LOL. But she is not creating music that sounds like top 40 pop either. It is created at the piano. Other tracks are added by other instrumentalists and vocal arrangements with back up singers, etc. Not to mention…it’s original. And not about clubs, lovely ladies, or money, LOL!

I guess the big bucks, (or appeal to the masses) though, is in music created the other way.

^ Absolutely. But your daughter is a real musician. I think these boys are too (this is not what they do for a living, but they were motivated by their frustration that THIS kind of product gets the success and real musicians, ones who are truly creative, do not get the credit and success they deserve).

I found it incredible that with today’s technology, one can sit in one’s basement and create and circulate ‘music’ that can then be listened to by millions.

I love they were able to identify, and extract the formula quite effectively. The ability to retrieve and replicate underlying formulas across many data points is a cognitive skill that is quite useful for success in a lot of fields. But I find it sad that in every industry, 80% of success goes to those who “do the formula”, be it published best sellers, movies, music or wine. This effect is not even confined to pop culture- I see it in the academic publication process as well.

I love it. I’m sharing it with my friends! Most of them are musicians and I know they’ll love it too. Most top 40 is just completely mass produced crap that all sounds the same.

Soozievt, a young man who grew up in my church is a real musician in NY, like your D. He composes at the piano, and he works the NYC bar scene. It’s a tough life, but he wouldn’t have it any other way. After graduation from NYU, he worked at Disney & on Broadway, but he is now trying to make his living with his own music. I have the utmost respect for him and for all the talented musicians like him. D is a part of the music scene in Nashville (business side rather than creative side), and she is blown away by the talent in that city. She knows many extremely talented musicians who are working hard to make a living by following their passion. She gets so frustrated by the artificially enhanced stuff that sells to the masses … the “artist” doesn’t have to be able to sing, because technology takes care of that. The “artist” doesn’t have to play an instrument or write songs, either. It’s pretty sad. But folks respond to the untalented, for whatever reason, and their “music” sells. Go figure.
