New Contest Added to Contests to Always Avoid
Creative Communication Poetry and Essay Contests

Just under 50% of everything submitted to Creative Communication is published in their anthologies. Unless you’re one of the few “winners”, you’ll need to buy a copy of the anthology in which you appear (typical price: $19.95). This unselective contest brings little prestige to the participants and appears to be a promotion to sell anthologies. Your time is better spent on quality contests.

13 Warning Signs of a Bad Poetry Contest

The main goal of a bad poetry contest appears to be extracting money from poets rather than honoring excellence. Bad contests typically show several of these warning signs. When in doubt, check with your local poetry society.

Unusually large number and size of cash awards (e.g., $58,000/year)

Contest sponsor tries hard to sell you products that incorporate your work, like anthologies (example)

Contest is free to enter, but ‘winners’ have to pay a high price for own copy of book

Contest turns up on “Scam Warning” pages when you search for it with Google

Hard to contact sponsor with questions - responses are slow or evasive

Low standards - not choosy about who gets published

Name is close to that of a prestigious contest but for a small difference

Prize is not money or publication, but ‘agency representation’ or something you must pay for

Hard to find the work of past winners to judge their quality for yourself

Small prize relative to reading fee (e.g., $5 fee for a $50 top prize)

Advertised in mass market magazines (Parade) and newspapers (Sunday comics) unrelated to poetry

You win a prize - but have to pay to attend a convention to receive it

Only short poems (30 lines or less) are accepted - the better to pack them into an anthology

Conclusion: total scam.

what if you’re one of the top ten winners?

Creative Communication is not a scam.
It’s free to enter, at no cost to the students/families.
It’s true that their aim is to sell anthologies,
but it’s a good venue to encourage many students to write & contribute,
while Cr. Comm also makes $.

For sure it’s not a “highly prestigeous” contest.
But look, it’s EXTREMELY difficult to win in those contests,
so students need to “season” themselves first,
by writing & submitting to “lower” level contests.
Do serious writers only aim for the Pulitzer or the National Book Award,
without having “worked their way up” first?

FYI, quite a few of local & area school students have been Top Ten winners
in Cr. Comm;
and they are truly very strong writers (have been award winners in prestigeous contests, including national & state winners in Scholastic, NCTE, & more).

Both of the above are not true for Cr. Comm:

  • Top Ten winners get a free anthology, and a check.
  • Cr. Comm is very reachable & prompt with replies.
They have even CALLED when needing to verify a single individual word in one’s submissions!

I totally agree that it is just a business and NOT a scam. But if you want a copy of a book with your poem in it, do one of the hardbound iBooks or something similar for about the same price and have a book with ALL your own poems and illustrated with your photos or other photos from the internet.

My father wrote an autobigraphy and as a Christmas present to him I had 10 copies of a book made (about 50 pages plus a color cover with a photo of him in WWII). It cost about $100, but to him it was if the book were “published” and he proudly displays it and shows it to his friends and visitors. Sure it was a vanity publication, but well worth the $100.
