Creativity in SAT Essays

Hello! For the essay, how much does creativity matter? Is it more important to have a very finely structured essay that directly answers the prompt, or to have a looser essay that answers the prompt but not “yes this is right” or “no this is wrong”? Can creativity harm you more than it can do for you?

The former is well proven to work and yield good scores. The latter, while I won’t say it can’t work, is risky at best and highly inadvisable in a very tight time limit with very rigid scoring guidelines.

The people reading the essay strongly want to see you make an argument and proving it with factual evidence. You are more “wishy washy” when you try to answer it from both sides. Therefore readers may not get a strong sense of what your position was if you take the “middle ground.” IMO I wouldn’t spend too much time on “creativity” or thinking of a outside the boc answer. That won’t earn you extra points, but answering the question with strong support will.
