Credit Cards

I’m starting a business this summer, but it requires a credit card. I wouldn’t be using the credit card for the business (all that’s required is that you have one) but I might use the card for small purchases to build credit. Are there any credit cards that are particularly good for teenagers? Any I should definitely stay away from?

Thanks!

P.S. I know I double-posted this thread. I wanted to be sure to get feedback from students and parents.

there’s a Visa Bux’s card designe especially for teenagers. The name changed, I think you can get it through a Wachovia bank or something.

Visa Buxx is for middle-aged teens - it’s basically a debit card in which the parent’s allot credit to. Just talk to your local bank about getting one, but definitely read the fine print. And don’t get caught up - if you feel yourself doing so, just cut it up and pay the final bill.

I have a Visa Buxx card through Bank of America. Going to discontinue use, though.

Visa Buxx is not a credit card. Just because a card has a Visa or Mastercard logo does not mean it is a credit card. Btw, what kind of business are you going to start that requires a credit card?

I’m starting an online book-reselling business. I don’t need to charge anything to the credit card, but the merchant with which I am working, Amazon, requires a number for registration.

Can we sell some of our AP/SAT prep books on your site? I got about 15 that I gotta get rid of. A few friends of mine have some too. I also have just random books too.

Are you sure that you need a credit card? You might just need a debit card with a Visa, Mastercard, etc logo with it…I always use my debit card for online purchases and it works the same as a credit card.

My site will be more of a retail site instead of a medium for outside sales. However, there are probably thousands of students who would be interested in your old books, and you could set up your own site to resell these items.

I’m not sure if I need specifically a credit card; I’m not sure why I need any type of card at all, since nothing in the selling process requires its use. However, since you can only apply as a seller once, I’d rather get a credit card and let it sit dormant than run the risk of being rejected.

A minor can not open any line of credit. What’s been described is a glorified check card. You’ll have to have an adult be a custodian over the credit account, and even then, you won’t be the one building credit.

A checking card is nice to have, and in most cases it can be used as a credit card with things such as online purchases, however it’s not exactly a line of credit, since it’s your own money.

You might want to get a credit card under your parents’ account. But since it’s not for personal use, I would probably recommend to look into Citi credit cards. I believe they have a student credit card, and a business one as well.

Thanks, for all of your replies!
I’ve been looking into the CapitalOne student card, since my family has experience with this. I can’t find them on the CapitalOne website. Are they only available through the mail?

you may try this student visa…They will start you with $150 or $250 and raise your limit as you build credit.
