I think you are asking about carry-over in terms of tuition. (If not, just ignore this answer
)

Your flat-fee tuition ($21,081 for Fall 2011) covers up to 18 units for the semester. The charge is the same for 12 to 18 units, so there is no refund if you take fewer than 18, and you do not get credit for unused units in future semesters. So, for example, if you took 16 units in Fall 2011 and 20 units in Spring 2012 you would not get carry-over credit for the 2 unused units from Fall, and you would be charged the excess units rate of $1,420/units for those extra 2 units for a total of $2,840 in addition to your flat-fee rate for the Spring 2012 semester.

Hopefully that makes sense so far :)

There are a few ways around paying full-price for those extra units:

-Trustee scholars can apply for up to 8 units beyond the 18 per semester covered by the scholarship through Exceptional Funding. You must apply the semster in advance (see website linked below) of the one in which you need them and can use the total 8 units at different times - for example, 2 extra units one semester, 4 units for a summer class (even a class abroad), and 2 extra units another semester.

Presidential scholars receive the same 8 units of exceptional funding, but it covers 1/2 of the excess tuition rate, so you would still pay $710/unit of the $1,420/unit excess tuition rate.

**ALL USC students are now eligible **for the Academic Achievement Award, which covers an extra 2 units (up to 20 per semester) for multiple semesters. There are several qualifiers - see website linked below. The main ones are: a USC GPA of at least 3.750, at least one semester completed at USC (so that you have a USC GPA), and a major/minor or double major combination that means you need those extra units. You must apply the semester in advance.

If you are not eligible for any of the above, you can take community college courses near your home over the summer to satisfy some requirements and free up space in your USC schedule. Pre-approval is always required (forms on your Oasis), and investigate the community college articulation agreements/histories carefully with your USC advisor to be sure you will receive the credit you need.
