Credit vs. GPA & Rank

During my freshman year of high school (I am now a Junior), I took a standard CP Band course at the recommendation of my counselor. Despite receiving an A in the class (it was band…), the 4.0 out of a possible 6.0 on a weighted scale has come back to haunt me with grade statistics. I haven’t since taken any band arts credits, due simply to a lack of interest, and now contemplate what value this one credit has to colleges. I assume that the value of a single arts credit is very low, raising a couple of questions:

Is it possible for me to request this course be removed from my high school record and GPA? (b/c I received an A)
Will colleges be more impressed with a sole band credit or with a better GPA and class rank? If I were to remove this credit my weighted GPA would go from 5.16 to 5.24 and my class rank from 6th to 2nd.

Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide,
Jake

Does your school require a fine arts credit? A lot of schools do. If yours does, than you’d have an obvious problem with asking to have the credit removed. Otherwise, it would really depend on the guidance counselors at your school. The change in class rank is pretty dramatic. At the same time though, I don’t know if it’s completely fair to take out a credit you chose to take, and colleges won’t look down on you for taking a band class. In my opinion, it shows that you had a hobby.

Well, you can’t unring that bell, so I doubt you’ll get the course removed. That said, colleges are going to look at your unweighted GPA, or they will assign their own weights, since every HS weights differently.

Bottom line, don’t worry about it.
