crew: including ERG times?

Hi There-
Do boarding schools with crew like to see the ERG time of an 8th grader applying to 9th? Would that typically be the applicant’s 2K score? For boys or girls, any idea what times for an 8th grader show potential, what times would be notable?
Thanks.

I’m not sure that boarding schools expect to see a 2K time, but if you have a strong one it certainly won’t harm you. I can only speak for girls 2K times, but I’d say anything under probably 9 minutes is reasonable, but if you have 8:30 or lower it’d be very good. I’m one of the top rowers at my school (2nd fastest 2K in the program as a sophomore), and at the beginning of the crew season my freshman year I was around 8:20?

A few years ago, I met a family whose child was applying to one of the same schools my daughter was applying to. This kid (I think he was applying for 10th) had placed really high at the Crash Bs…like the top American in his age class. Now that, I think you put in your application…anything else you just communicate to a coach directly.

2K times are definitely something you should talk to the crew coach about if you visit the school.

At your age, coaches are more interested in experience. Do you currently row at school or at a club during the summer? What boat and seat are you in? Who do you train with and how competitive is the program? Even though you’ll be sweeping in SS- can you scull, too? That sort of thing.

On applications, list your accomplishments- Regattas, medals and indoor rowing championships. If you don’t have anything to list- talk about the sport as a passion or interest.

Crash B’s is something athletes train for all year and it’s fairly intense. If you’re old enough and think you can do well- go. (SS crew coaches pay close attention to this event and it’s not uncommon for recruitment to happen in the last week of February). The 2013 Crash B’s website went live last week. If you’re still too young or inexperienced to compete, I highly recommend you go as a spectator.

Also- worry more about your PR as you get closer to college. You have time!
