On my most recent SAT, I scored 600 on the CR section and an 8 on the essay and I want to raise those to 800 and 10+ if possible.
For the reading, I got 16 mistakes/omitted: 5 SC and 11 passages. I realized that I need to ameliorate my vocab. Also, I’m not a good details interpreter.
If you used to score in the 600 range, what did you do to raise your score? Please share your tips!
Well, I got a 10 on the essay and instead of writing two full pages like the time I did (which I got a 8) I wrote 1 3/4 pages. I used two examples, one from a book and the other one about Martin Luther King. And I checked my grammar (which seems to be my problem when I rush).
Hope that helps. Also, you can google how to get a 12 on the sat essay, or you can go to Amazon and get a book for the essay portion.
@paoloppd - its great that your essay strategy worked for you, but I’d be careful recommending it to others. Most students benefit from writing 2 full pages. In fact, if you were able to get a 10 with a “short” essay, you may have missed the opportunity of a 12; some practice writing the same quality essay but faster may have resulted in that elusive score.
@CDH2013, I never advised to do so to the OP. I’m just saying (or stating) from my own experience what worked for me. I have been reading many people that says that it is a must to write two full pages to get a 10+. Well, I got a 10 just writing 1 3/4 pages. However, during the time I wrote two full pages I got an 8.
People should be careful on what advice they are giving. It is not about writing 2 pages, putting some examples here and there. No, that’s not how it works.
A good essay 10+ should have few grammar mistakes, it should coherent, and must be supported by two examples, quantity is not enough. That’s it.
@paoloppd Thank you! I also received an 8 on my essay (I did the SAT just once so far) but I used a movie and a book as my two examples. I’m not sure why I got an 8 though!
@CHD2013 I wrote a long essay with advanced SAT vocab but I think the issue lies in my essay’s "coherence?..
I’d appreciate it if I receive feedback on my SAT essay from you! Can you see it?
If you’re struggling with coherence, make sure you’re definitively taking a side on the question and making the logic behind your argument as clear as possible to the reader. A strong into and conclusion that elegantly set up the structure of your argument are essential given how little time the readers spend on each essay.
If you can stay coherent while filling up the two pages, definitely do so. Based on a lot of CC threads and personal experience, filling all the space carries at least a bit of weight with the readers. However, like others have said, 1 and 3/4 pages are fine if the time would be better spent improving your essay.
Something that helped me was reading practice essays that people submitted to CC for grading. Try and notice any points in the essay where their argument could be made clearer or the writing made more elegant. Soon, you’ll be much better at doing in your own SAT essays, especially on the fly. Furthermore, there are many 12 point essays posted in various threads that I found very helpful as models.
Above all, though, practice seems to help the most. Writing lots of practice essays with the prompts from the blue book or past tests will flex your rhetorical muscles and make things a lot easier come test day.
(N.B. What is your multiple choice writing score? If you have trouble bringing your essay score up, it might be easier to tackle the questions you’re missing in the writing MC instead. I can talk about my CR strategies too if you’re interested. Feel free to message me!)
