Critical Reading Question

For number 20 in Test 7, section 5 (blue book), can someone please explain to me how the expressions betray “one’s true opinions”? I understand why the other answer choices are wrong but i still don’t understand how to justify (E) as being correct.

Glad to help… the key to E is the word “unconscious” it matches up with the word “involuntary” in the question. Also, the paragraph is about “ideas”, which basically amounts to students’ opinions. Finally the word “betray” means to reveal.

Hope that helped.^^

Ahhh thanks! The thing that really tripped me up was “betray” because i was thinking of it as being similar to “traitor” instead of “reveal”.

Ahhhh, remember not to assume literal meanings of words. Many words, such as “betray” will be used by their secondary meanings, or meanings that are within the context of the reading passage. Congratulations! You have discovered a flaw in your approach that you can adjust to score better on the SAT.
