Critical Thinking and Other Academic Questions

One of the main reasons that I am drawn to LAC’s and Haverford is the emphasis they place on widely-useful skills such as critical/independent thinking and communication. Could anyone provide examples of how Haverford has done this? The idea of such teaching sounds great, but I would like to know how it has actually happened in practice.

Also, how good is the education in writing and other communications? Again specific information would be helpful.

Finally, how have any students felt about the distribution between one’s major and other areas? Meaning, how much time roughly is spent on each? I understand that a liberal arts education is broad, and I value that, yet I am just curious as to how intense of an education students receive in their majors.
