Prompt:Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you.

I had always thought that my future was going to be in the medical field, a doctor of
some sort. This was never because I had a passion for medicine or science but rather my parents would push it upon me. Sometimes, I would want to argue but then I realized that I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and at least becoming a doctor meant I would have a fruitful future. That was my mindset until my 11th grade year. The summer prior to 11th grade, I had joked with a friend about writing a movie plot in which all of our friends were characters in it. Although it was a joke, I began writing ideas down for this plot and converting my friends into fictional characters. Then before I knew it, a fantasy novel was in the making and a passion was finally discovered! I worked on the novel during most of my free time during the year and finally in March, it was complete. As the title Upheaval labeled my work, the writing field labeled my perspective for the future. When I had started writing my book, publication was not even a realistic possibility in my mind but on July 31, 2012, my book was published and sent to online retailers for distribution. On this self-fulfilling journey, I found that writing and literature was my passion. I am not sure how it was not evident beforehand, because literature classes had always been my favorite but I would spend all my time doing extra science related activities. Now during my senior year, I am taking an AP English Language class and a creative writing class to further explore my ambitions toward writing. As learning about rhetoric is becoming more and more interesting, I now know that I want take the writing, pre law route while spending a lot of time studying cultures through literature rather than the science route of pre-med. It is evident that my parents have not yet softened to the idea of me not becoming a doctor, but I know they will accept it in time. Accomplishing a published novel has impacted me in such a positive light by revealing my passion, a source of motivation, and giving me a path to follow for a happy and
successful future. It has transformed me from my previous apathetic, go with the flow self who just accepted what my parents told me to do into an individual who knows what he wants in life and now has a defined self to rely upon. And I have learned that that is what is required of me to attain my goals.
