Cross-registrations?

Can someone help me out here? How easy is it to cross-register for courses in Columbia?
I am putting together my application for journalism (2013) and if I do get in, I was hoping to take a few classes in economics and statistics…

I am going to write and check with the department as well, but I know little about cross-registrations and was wondering if someone here can help me understand it better!
I have looked through the site [Cross Registration | Columbia University Registrar](Cross-Registration | Office of the University Registrar)
and it says I have to check with the respective department etc…

This is important for me, because once I am there (if I am accepted), I want to ‘upgrade’ to a dual degree program, that’s offered with journalism, and it requires some economics and statistics classes. Ideally, I’ll need to start taking these classes right away, because my application for the second-degree needs to be in, before I finish half my course work for the first one!

I know it sounds complicated. If you have some experience with cross-registrations, I’d love to here from you. Thanks!
