hi right now im a sophomore but i took the sats last year 2 apply to imsa. i got 710 math and 660 verbal. im 1st out of 721 at my high school. i dont know wat i want 2 major in but im interested in environmental science or being a doctor. last year i was all about going 2 mit but now im not so sure. i was thinking id like 2 go 2 cornell, brown, johns hopkins, u of chicago, northwestern, duke, stanford, blah blah blah. any suggestions of good schools w/ liberally minded? thanx!

Why crunchy granola?

crunchy granola is the hippie stereotype…my spanish teacher calls me Crunchy:)

Your list sounds good…1st out of 721 is really good. I wouldn’t give up on MIT; I think it’s an awesome school and it seems like they have a great sense of humor. Chicago I love… Maybe add Georgetown or GWU, but honestly you have a long time to think about this and for most people those lists change a lot. Good luck.

ya i loved mit when i visited, esp all the hacks. thanx 4 all the advice!

yeah, I second chicago. It’s a great school.

I disagree, I think Chicago and MIT arent that great. GREAT schools, but socially lacking. Also, med schools care A LOT about grades and MIT is very cuttroat. You would do a lot better to go to brown, stanford, etc where you will get a higher GPA. If you love MIT go for it of course, but be aware of these issues.

As a safety look at Vassar. Also Dartmouth has a very liberal crunchy scene (cruncy granola :), and about 85% democrats. Worth looking into. Your other schools are good, except JHU I has many of the same issues as MIT (cutthroat, hard to get high GPA, etc).

You seem to like large schools, know what you want and do a search. Don’t be brand loyal, there are lots of excellent smaller lesser known schools to be considers.

The thing with the Dartmouth scene though its one scene within a large overall scene. Same with Northwestern, Stanford, etc. Brown and Vassar that scene is much larger.

Have you looked at Tufts? :)

Grinnell!!! Also maybe U of Seattle?

good 2 know, good 2 know, thanx much. ya i was also thinking tufts. any of u “crunchy granolas”? it makes me so happy when i hear of ppl who r vegetarians or buy organic/fairtrade stuff. just makes my day. idk y

aww i just looked at the grinnell site and it sounds cute :)

If you want crunchy, you may want to look at Brown, Wesleyan, Grinnell, Oberlin, Carleton. Grinnell would be a good safety for you - a lot of crunchy kids - and they have a good sense of humor which I can see that you do also. With your grades and scores, you’ll probably get a nice merit scholarship. If you’re really interested in environmental studies, Middlebury has a good program. There’s also the College of the Atlantic which ONLY has “human ecology” and has a beautiful setting on the coast of Maine. I think Bowdoin has a pretty good program in environmental studies. I don’t think of Northwestern, Chicago, Stanford, Tufts, Dartmouth or Vassar as the least bit crunchy.

Vassar??? Its totally mad liberal reefer madness. It was less so than Wesleyan, but not too far behind. Dartmouth has a crunchy scene, but its only one scene as I said. There are also jocks, preppys, rave kids, any and everything. Stanford similarly has a crunch minority. Chicago, Tufts probably not.

I think this is a joke, she said she loved the “hacks” at MIT…

?? in case u didnt know, the hacks are the pranks that the students pull like someone always blew a whistle, then fed the birds so that at one of the football games, when the referee blew a whistle, all the birds came flying. i love lightheartedness esp when ppl are working so hard and can find the time to still have fun
