guys, I got in College of engineering at Cornell university. Now, I understand that we declare our majors in the sophomore year, which makes me wonder do we have to compete against our classmates to get in some of the popular majors like Comp Science.? In essence, my question is are there limited number of seats for a particular major, or can any no. of students take whatever they want? If there are limited seats and we do not have a certain rank in class we may not get in the major we want to, and we would be stuck studying something else…can such a situation happen?
No, don’t worry about it a situation like this. Just worry about the classes themselves if you want to go down the CS route because it is difficult.

@tchemhatr If you’re already admitted to CoE, I think you can choose any engineering major as long as you complete the prerequisites. See http://www.cs.cornell.edu/undergrad/CSMajor#csmajor
I haven’t heard of Cornell having a fixed # of seats for any particular discipline inside CoE. I presume they ensure they’re roughly getting the right distribution during the admission time.
CS doesn’t have a set number of seats but they will not accept you into the major if you have poor grades in the classes. As long as you do well in the classes, you can affiliate just fine.
A big thanx to everyone for taking out the time to reply !
Cornell student here:
In order to affiliate with a major, you have to take certain classes and get above a certain grade in them within the first two years of your education at Cornell. These classes and these grades will depend on the college you are in, and the major you are planning to do.
There is no concept of “seats”, and no limit on the number of people who can affiliate with a major.
During your first semester, you will be part of an “Engineering Seminar”, and will be assigned to a faculty advisor, whose sole job will be to help you decide what you want to do and what classes you should take. It’s fairly straightforward.
